external hard drive and usb keys

hello its me with maybe a very another stupid question !
can I stop my usb keys and external hard drive from opening automatically as I would prefer to scan them before openeing as I’m certain that this is how I got infected last time

Let your USB drive plugged and run Autorun Eater or Flash Disinfector, allowing them to clean up all drives. They would create hidden folders named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. These folders protect your drives from future infection. After that, reboot your computer.

You should ensure that your OS is up to date as there have been recent security updates that change the way autorun functions and allows you to change the settings so that only Optical media can use the autorun feature, disabling USB autorun functionality.
