"extra" apps in firewall

In the firewall, what do the groped/extra apps (the ones where it lists a whole bunch of apps that share a permission, and the one’s under those like root execution and linux kernal) do. Essentially, that apps that have a shield icon because they don’t have their own?

More importantly, which ones need to be unblocked to allow functionality (for example, until VPN was unblocked, I couldn’t watch videos on the youtube app, but i could still browse them)?

Hi,

these are essential parts of the OS, some users might want to block those, but you usually won’t want to block them. Also mapping of those items and OS functionality can’t be done 100% because the mapping is different for different OS versions. For example to allow Android Market, you might want to unblock the “Account and Synchronization” item, but it might not be necessary.
