failed to load aswSnx

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
aswSnx

I noticed this when reviewing my system event logs. It started about 3 days ago and happens every time i reboot.
It started after i restored Avast to default settings because it was slowing everything down so much with the real time scans.

Avast Free 6.0.1125
defs 110702-0
Win XP3 all updates current.

Yesterday, avast was running so much it froze my screen up tight in a google chrome session watching a tv show on hulu.
I had to Power off because my HD was spinning non stop for 20 min and my cpu at 100% and getting so hot.
After a time of cooling off, I rebooted only to find my HD was not found. Some diagnostics revealed my C: drive had somehow been renamed to D: (normally a CD-Rom) and my second physical HD (normally E:) had been renamed to C: ???

After i got them back to usual. my usual C: drive gave me a missing NTLDR error.
anyway i got back up and running with my installation CD by copying the damaged files from the install cd to C: , but I am still getting this error with the Avast Sandbox Driver.

I am not saying it caused my problem, but i am not sure that it didn’t either.
Does anyone know a fix for this?
Should I disable the Auto Sandbox?
If my Driver is corrupt, how and where can i get a fresh one?

Thanks in advance.
Jason

With all the back and forth of changed drive letters it could have an impact on the avast installation.

Try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair.

If that doesn’t resolve it you may need to reinstall avast, a clean reinstall might be best:

  • Download the latest version of avast, 6.0.1125 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).

    1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 5.x if previously installed and then for 6.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Wow
That’s a lot of work to restore 1 bad file.
Ok I will get to work.
Thanks for the quick reply and the Advice.

One more question, i already have the latest version installed, if i uninstall and reinstall, what is to keep this from happening again?

I have searched and found problems with this file being corrupt on other users systems, But I can find no information about the cause…

Anyway
thanks DavidR

It sounds/looks more than it is, if the repair works and the problem goes, then no need for the second stage. If it doesn’t resolve it, there really is little else you can do.

We really aren’t looking at just one bad/corrupt file as it could quite easily effect others, just that you are seeing it presented in the one area.

@newJason: run command line and type: “fltmc load aswsnx”. What error message do you get? Thanks.

i typed

C:\>fltmc load aswsnx

and it returned no message

so i typed it again and got this:

Load failed with error: 0x80070420
An instance of the service is already running.

C:\>Load failed with error: 0x80070420
'Load' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

C:\>An instance of the service is already running.

so apparently it loaded the first time, then the second time i got the error.

so obviously it is not corrupt, it just will not load on boot up

hmm
I will just re-install and see if that fixes it.
Thanks guys
