Are you properly connected to the internet? Are you using dial-up, DSL, or wireless?
I seem to have the very same problem. I am connected to the internet via DSL, using the very same gateway since 2006. Every other i-net related program works just fine. Since a few days a red popup appears, that my Database is outdated, but I can’t update. Obviously the automatic update didn’t work either.
For both of you with this problem, it’s sometimes caused by a firewall blocking the Avast updater.
Try allowing the Avast updater in the firewall, also try a manual update, see if the same thing happens.
Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
Also check:
If your subscription allows the update right now (i.e., if it is not expired). Home (free) version need registering each 14 months.
If your firewall settings and allow avast.setup to connect.
If you’re not sure, just turn off your firewall (to be sure the update failure is not due to it).
Maybe you should ‘remove’ avast.setup entry, try to update, receiving a new alert from the firewall, allowing it and checking it to remember.
Check your proxy settings into avast!:
Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy
Make sure your browser is not set to “Work Offline” (this option is generally in the File menu).
If it doesn’t help, try switching from “Auto-detect” to “No proxy” (I’m assuming you’re not connecting to the Internet via proxy).
Also you can try changing update service’s login account, follow this:
Open services control panel (e.g. Start->Run, and type: services.msc
Double-click on avast! iAVS4 Control Service to show properties. Switch to LogOn page.
Enter administrator account name and password.
Do the same for avast! Antivirus service.
Then start update again.
For your questions:
Attached is the last session(250 lines exceed the maximum allowed length here) of the log file.
Ok, changing the proxy avast told me, my key was temporary deactivated (bought in february for a prolongation), reentering it reset its expiration date from May 1, 2009 to May 1, 2008, so now avast tells me, that my licence has expired … WTF? That’s a big mess and something the program definitely should NOT do (and definitely something I could not expect)! How can I get it to the right date again?
acme, which version of avast are you using… the license key that is shown in your logs is not familiar to me…
Belgarath, maybe it will be good to start your own thread… two mixed issues here.
Maybe you can send an email to sales (at) avast.com and ask for support.
Hi,
I have reinstalled a new home edition(free) in my PC with a new license but the same issue still happens.
The new setup.log of this version is attached.
The update process gets stuck as the attached image.
BTW, I have changed my proxy from “Auto-detect” to “No proxy” but doesn’t work, either.
Please let me know what can I do …
Thanks,
Acme
Intentional deletion, just viewed your image.
Again, strange…

Let me throw something out here…
Could the time/date settings be in play here ???
I know that with another AV product, the time/date settings come into play indicating that the virus db is ‘out of date’ but I don’t know that it would cause an inability to update unless it would also cause the registration key to be in an ‘expired’ mode…
Just a thought 8)
If the date/time were incorrect, yes it could have an effect, but not this one, acme wouldn’t even get to the point of downloading anything, not it failing during the update.
But you would/should also be getting an out of date alert from the Windows Security Center. So in this case I doubt the date time has any bearing.
