Fake Windows Security Center - How do I remove this? (safely)

Hello folks,

Im a complete novice when it comes to AV so would appreciate any help.

I have Avast installed, Im using Mozilla on Windows 7 and the fake “Windows Security Center” has just made an appearance. It threw a few pop ups at me but so far Ive just closed them , i dont think i clicked on anything. I cant access Task Manager. I havent run any anti-malware or removal programs yet, but id appreciate any advice on whats the best course of action.

  1. Download, update & run free Mbam: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
  2. Let it deal with its findings.
  3. Post the Mbam log here.

The scan is still running, almost an hour at this stage with no infections found.

I should mention that the original browser is still open (and frozen), waiting for me to click the fake ‘install antivirus now’. Will the scan find anything if it hasnt been clicked?

Just run quick scan

probably not, i guess when you click install it will download a file that you need to run to install the rogue

Okay ive taken a scrn shot but the File Upload has frozen.

Are you saying I should go ahead, get infected - then repeat the process - run another Mbam?

I dont think you will get infected…

If this is the usuall fake scan page it is some java thing that is doing a fake scan and ask you to download and install a program.
If you say yes you get a download that you save and then you just close the browser…
do NOT run the file downloaded but send it to avast…
