I had the “System Fix” virus, a variant of the fakesysdef virus/trojan.
Why did avast not detect this virus?
I have run avast full time for years and not had a problem previously.
My guess is that it almost certainly came from a web page, not an email attachment.
I used Norton Power Eraser and Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper to get rid of it (I hope) after about 10 hours of chkdsk and other stuff.
I’d really rather not switch to Microsoft Security Essentials, but I think I might have to.
Thanks for any thoughts on how this problem might be averted in the future still using avast.

These types of viruses,fake av’s,are repacked every 1-2 hours,so it’s really hard for AV’S to detect rogue av’s.
