hi. i am using avast 4.7 home edition, and i am getting a false alarm on the following file in the game “granny in paradise”. the file is “granny_download_r1a.exe”. this appears to be a file that is specific to the version of the game from real networks “real arcade”. we called real networks tech support and they told us it was a false alarm, and this was confirmed when i submitted the file to Virus Total, and avast was the only scanner to come up as saying this file was infected.
hopefully updated definitions will be released soon, so that this false alarm can be fixed. i love avast home and would absolutely hate to switch because of a false alarm.
any info on this is much appreciated. thank’s in advance for any help on this matter.
here is the virus total information. i am using the most recent virus definitions for avast, dated 11-15-06.
Complete scanning result of “granny_download_r1a.exe”, received in VirusTotal at 11.16.2006, 01:43:38 (CET).

Are you going to move just because of one false alarm? :
You don’t have to. Just add it to the Exclusion lists:
For the Standard Shield provider (on-access scanning):
Left click the ‘a’ blue icon, click on the provider icon at left and then Customize.
Go to Advanced tab and click on Add button…
For the other providers (on-demmand scanning):
Right click the ‘a’ blue icon, click Program Settings.
Go to Exclusions tab and click on Add button…
You can use wildcards like * and ?.
But be carefull, you should ‘exclude’ that many files that let your system in danger.
thank you tech. i followed your instructions and added the file to the exclusion lists in on-demand scanning and on-access scanning. hopefully a new database update will be released that will fix the false alarm. how long does it usually take to fix a false alarm?
i’m hoping they will correct it soon. aside from this one little glitch, avast home has proven to be superior to any other antivirus solution i have tried.
i have not yet heard back from tech support, but they now have the file in question, so i am hopeful they are working on updated virus database files that will correct the problem.
