I’m getting several false alarms with an updated, new installation of Avast4. Is there
anyway to set Avast to ignore specific files
once they are cleared?
Four other AVs detect nothing and the files
have been on my computer for 2-4 years.

FMI: In which files does AVAST report what kind of viruses?
It is possible to exclude specific file from testing - see page “Exclusions” in program settings.
This method will affect all parts of avast! antivirus and is available for both Home and Proffesional Editions.
If you are using Professional Edition you can specify files to be excluded for every task of avast! using enhanced user interface.
Can you send described files to support@asw.cz? Best of all will be to analyze these files…

:-\On the subject of false Alarms- I downloaded Avast because I wanted to check my PC because I was not sure whether my Panda Antivirus was working properly. Avast found several viruses that Panda did not find. Three of these viruses were in Panda itself! Upon complaining to Panda, I was told that Avast was picking up virus definitions from their virus files, and these were not real viruses. Is this possible?

Absolutely. Panda is notorious for this. avast! is not the only AV that is actually detecting viruses in Panda files. I think it’s truly unprofessional of the Panda guys - just imagine: they keep the virus strings unencrypted!!! >:( It’s an elementary necessity of every AV program to encrypt/hide the virus strings to prevent other AV tools from detecting them… :-\

When I tried using the exclusion list I found it has a limit of 9 entries. I’ve mentioned this to Avast.

Think I will stick with Avast in future!
There is no limit to number of items to be excluded but there is limit to their size. It is limited now to 260 characters for all exclusions.
I have changed this to 32 KB so it should not be problem to you any more. It will be available in the next program update.
To get back to the topic/Subject, did the mentioned files contains any Virus?
When I replaced the files with original
copies, the alerts stopped, so they may
have been infected. I could not get my
other 4 AVs to confirm a problem but I
replaced them anyway so they would not
show up on Avast scans.
