False Positive.

Hi all,

I’m trying to download an old version of mirc chatting program version number 6.21

But everytime I try and download it Avast blocks it saying its a suspicious file. The site I go to for old versions of programs is called oldversion .com (i typed the space so its not a live link… wasnt sure of forum policy).

Even if I disable the avast shields to download it, and re-enable them, I cant install it.

Whats funny is all the other versions of that program, so far as I’ve tested, download with avast having no problems with it.

They have a wealth of old software there, but they do not scan for viruses.
When you scan the download file with Metascan Online what results do you get?

polonus

I’ve never had any problems with files from there before, and I know of other people in the past who have downloaded that file.

How do I download the file in other to upload it to that site you mentioned? Is there a site I can just put in the download url in to? Surely that would be safer.

Edit: I just tried to download the file from filehippo .com , a site some of the mods have suggested people use previously, and still no joy. the file name is mirc621.exe

Is there a site I can just put in the download url in to?

I’ve not had any problems with mirc before, and as I say every other version of mirc from both oldversion and filehippo is able to be downloaded and doesnt contain any viruses or anything.

I think its a false positive.

The file itself unpacks in to different files and directories. The actual program name when using the program is mirc.exe which is universal with all versions of mIRC. I can see how it would exhibit malware properties because of its unpacking etc. But as far as I know its safe.

Why not downloading the latest version?
If looks like you are trying to use it illegally.
Mirc is not freeware, you will have to pay for it.

I have paid for it, but I’m using a script (addons that most mIRC’ers use) that only works on older versions unfortunately.

The trouble is nobody makes script addons for the new versions these days. sadly the IRC networks arent what they used to be.

it says 9/57 say its a virus.
something is wrong with your reading ;)

avast = Win32:Mirc-Z [PUP]
kaspersky = not-a-virus:Client-IRC.Win32.mIRC.621
NANO = Riskware.Win32.MIRC.cbjdv
nProtect = Abuse-Worry/W32.mIRC.1367553

PUP = not virus / Possible Unwanted Program

lol… you are right :slight_smile:

Anyways, I thought I’d just bring it to you guys attention. I do trust avast’s program more than the others, so I’ll avoid the program to be on the safe side.

As people say “better be safe than sorry” :slight_smile:

Dalnet and Undernet have good help channels with Mirc scripting.
There shouldn’t be much that have to change in order to make your script(s) work with the latest version.
Besides, Khaled has made changes for more compatibility with old(er) scripts.
It can very well be they work in version 7.38

Besides that, there some (possible) security holes patched and you can always look for a script that is working.
There really is no need to use a old(er) version of Mirc.
