Is this Win 98 first or second edition? If SE, have you installed all the updates, such as the fast-shutdown patch? (the patch helps). If Win 98 FE, you can try MSConfig (go Start > run> msconfig >general > advanced – then disable fast shutdown… see if that helps.
I know that sometimes for whatever reason, after installing avast, shutdown problems do occur on Win 98 systems. I’ve never been able to figure out why. I have one Win98 (non-SE) system that suffered the shutdown problem you’re experiencing. I uninstalled avast, then reinstalled it some days later, and the problem went away. Why I dont’ know, but I sort of suspect it may have something to do with in what order avast is installed – causing a higher or lower priority of the way avast is run in the start up and shut down sequencing.
Maybe others here may have some ideas as well.
I am running Win 98 not SE, with all the dribble ware.
Today fast & automatic shutdown is working.
Is there a way to change the booting sequence for Avast?
I don’t want to disable the fast shutdown.
thanks
As Starfighter already told. MS has a patch for shutdown problems on 98(se). It is a known problem with Windows.
Yes, use Startup Delayer (http://www.r2.com.au)
The patch is for Win 98 Second Edition. Can it be used on Win 98??
Version is Win98 4.10.1998
The other post suggests a start up delayer. Why startup when the problem is shutdown?
Thanks
Just because you asked for it… see here:
Startup delayer is what you were loking for…
