FF 1.5 & JRE 1.5.0_06 incompatible ?

 Had someone on another forum post a request for help :
"Firefox had been working perfectly until a couple of days ago, I think when I installed Java on it. Now, it doesn’t want to load any pages at all, and also I can’t quit it at all. Firefox.exe stays in the “processes” in my PC, and I can’t even end the process manually. "

Are Firefox 1.5 & Sun Java’s JRE 1.5.0_06 incompatible ?

Hi Spiritsongs,

Not on my machine. Been running both since they came out.

I’ve had all sorts of problems with Firefox 1.5 installing it ontop of an existing installation. I recommend, uninstalling ALL versions of Firefox and redownloading it and reinstalling it. It works fine with that version of Java but has some massive memory leaks with certain Java content (not a fault of Java and different versions will not help). It has to be fixed in Firefox.

Hi FwF,

This is the main reason that I switched to Flock. Comparing Flock to Firefox, I think as soon as Flock becomes operational as a public version, I will abandon Firefox. I block script on Firefox and Flock, and only allow it for trusted sites, and I like in-browser pre-hyperlink scanning. But people are not aware the real danger lies in remote links offered. For instance people get an e-card, they click the remote link and they are without proper protection against hostile code inside funny gadgets etc. A scenario malware artists and hackers love, pre-scanning links helps you there considerably.

I have no problems whatsoever, but one of my friends reported that problem. I will call and ask him to join and post.

 Since my post of yesterday, I came across :

I let FreewheelinFrank know of this link and he said he
 would look into it .

I’ve been using Firefox 1.5 and Java 5.0.6 since they came out, with no problem.

The tag support box for Mozilla and Netscape was unticked.

By using the latest Java Plug-in with APPLET tag support, you can help to ensure that clients running your applets will have the latest Java 2 Platform.

Q: Can I continue to use OBJECT tags to call my applets?

A: Yes. Even though the Java Plug-in has been enhanced to support APPLET tags, it is fully backward compatible with existing web pages that use OBJECT tags to launch applets. Moreover, the JRE/Java Plug-in continues to ship with the HTML Converter for those developers who want to invoke their applets using OBJECT rather than APPLET tags.

Applet tags are a way of calling Java apps. I have mucked about with different calling tags for Java in the past, but to tell the truth, I’m far from an expert.

I’d guess that if you visit a page that uses tags, you’ll need to have the box checked.

Having that box unticked certainly hasn’t been a source of problems on my machine.

The problem is not Java but the failure to do a clean install.

Clean install of Firefox made no differance on my system.
I first Uninstalled FF add/remove programs deleted my profiles folder
Cleaned Registry of FF entries I then uninstalled Sun Java VM Reg clean Java
Reinstalled FF Reboot/ reinstalled Java (jre1.5.0_060) still the same result
any suggestions

Are you using Windows XP? And are you using an Administrator account?

Yes to both XP Fully patched well as patched as MS allows and uninstalled and updated logged on as Admin

Do you have any old version of Netscape, Mozilla or AOL installed?

Use this test page in IE and Firefox and tell me the results:

Jave Test Page

I have the same error when trying to tick the box for Mozilla/Netscape.

However, Java has been working fine in Firefox.

I will try testing a page which uses the tag and see if there is any problem.

I used the test page and all is A-OK (saw the dancing Duke) … but then, I am using updated IE6 and did a Java update last week.

Hello forum friends,

In Flock no problem, Duke dancing his head off with the latest Sun Java version.

No problems in Firefox 1.5.

The inability to check the box seems to be intended and not necessary for Java to work in Firefox:

The "Applet Tag Support" settings described in step 1 do not apply to Firefox. Firefox automatically scans for the Java plugins and will use them if found. Skip step 1 if you are using Firefox.
  1. Open the Windows Control Panel , “Java Plugin”. In the Java Control Panel, go to “Advanced → Applet Tag Support”, check “Mozilla and Netscape” and click “OK” to activate support for your browser.

No older versions of netscape installed the Duke will not is not dancing thanks for the help
I’ll get this one fixed can’t be too much of a problem

Java and the dancing Duke are now operating fine in FF thanks for the help

No problems here either. Actually, the FF 1.5 and Sun Update 6 are the first versions of the two that have consistently worked well together for me.
