Figured out how to stop Emergency Update

Well, I finally figured out how to stop the d*#n Emergency Update from screwing up my computer. (it seems to run faster too.)

Boot into safe mode.
Go to the Avast program folder.
Rename the AvastEmUpdate.exe to AvastEmUpdate.exe.not
I also had to rename the aswRunDll.exe as well (I assume this tried to call the emergency update and when it couldn’t it just stayed in the task manager.)

Avast seems to be working OK, of course I don’t really know if it is protecting my computer anymore, but it is a small price to pay for not having my firewall annoying me every few days asking if it is OK for that PESKY Emergency Update to access the internet.

I would even have been OK with allowing it to access, and tried that, but it seems to always be located in a different place so my firewall can’t remember it. I have about a dozen entries in my firewall for the Emergency Update.

Hope this helps.

Mark.

AvastFree also places an entry for emergencey updates in “Scheduled Tasks”. De-activating it there may avoid this safe mode renaming, etc. You could also block execution of AvastEmUpdate.exe with your firewall.
…my 2 cents.

Renaming aswRunDll is certainly not a good idea - some scanner detections depend on that (i.e. some threats may not be detected).
