"File is not packed. Cannot Process."

this has now happened two times on two different machines:

received an email (outlook express on xp sp1) this morning which was caught by avast! as containing “Win32.Dialer [Trj]”.

avast! offered several options (rename, move, repair) how to deal with the infected email attachement (named xxx_avi.zip).

however, what ever option i chose, avast! balked on me with “File is not packed. Cannot process.”. This dialog referenced a zip-file in my local temp directory. i inspectd this temp directory and the file simply was not there …

i could not get rid of this dialog, exept hitting the “ok” button. the dialog then closed, but immediately opened again. i had to close oeutlook express to escape from tis recursive behavior.

Same thing happened to me today (June 7).

good to hear that i am not the only one. - now, let’s hope we get an"official" statement on this …

drah,

I would guess that Avast wil not process the file because it is no longer a zipped file.
You may not see the file in the temp directory if it is a “hidden file”. You need to set your system to display all files, then go back and see if it is there.
Something similar happened to me and believe me, when Avast tells you a file is somewhere…it is.

Can you manually do a system search for the file?
If you find it…do not click on it…just find it.

The Avast team or a senior moderator will need to know where or if it is there.

I do not think that Win32.dialer is a false positive. Avast is telling you it is a trojan so wait for Avast team to give you more info.

Good luck.

thanks for your post.

i can assure you that i checked for hidden files. there were none in the temp directory. a search covering the complete drive also did not come up with the file.

what got on my nerves most is not the detection of an email carrying a trojan but the somewhat “chaotic” behavior of avast!

i am a computer professional and know how to deal with such events, but an average user might well be confused by this kind of behavior.

thanks for your post.

This has once again happened on one of my systems this morning.

The behavior of avast!4 - imho - is totally unacceptable and I would really like to have one of the avast! guys comment on this.

I’ll have our QA team checked it. I guess it might be a problem related to recursive packing (ZIP archive inside of MIME archive) - I’ll get back to you on this asap.

All right, the bug was confirmed. It’s been fixed already.
Please wait for the upcoming update - that should resolve the problem…

Sorry for this,
Vlk

Nice to hear that it’s already fixed. Thanks.
