File reputation warning after Windows login

Hi,

I started getting these messages after Windows login. The files seem to be related to Windows Update. It might also be related to the Windows Defender updates that Windows tries to install but fail because it is disabled (automatically). What do you think?

I thought all Windows updates were digitally signed

Me too… I don’t even know why Defender tries to update, because it’s disabled. Other than that I don’t what it could be.

You might find http://www.eightforums.com/windows-updates-activation/5906-windows-defender-kb2267602-update-fails.html interesting, particularly if you are using Windows 8, and CCleaner.

Thanks will give this a try and see what happens. Although I still wonder why Avast thinks this is a threat.

I have Win 8.1 and Windows Defender definitely doesn’t try to update itself when a properly set up alternate anti-malware solution is in place (e.g., Avast! free). The last update I’ve gotten from Microsoft was on December 10.

I suggest that you uninstall Avast! and reinstall, to see if you can trigger the correct “shut down and be silent” behavior in Windows Defender.

Read the message carefully… Because you’re using reputation services, Avast considers the file a threat simply because it hasn’t gained a good reputation yet. If that’s not to your liking, there is a setting in the Web Shield set that governs this behavior entitled [ ] Warn when downloading files with poor reputation.

I’ve always thought that perhaps there should be a separate Warn when downloading files with unknown reputation setting. “Not well known” seems fundamentally different from “poor”.
