File System Shield

Hello everyone, I have a few questions I’d like to ask:

  1. Does the File System Shield scan the files on a USB Drive as soon as it’s plugged in?

  2. I remember reading something posted by someone on the avast team (I think it was Vlk) that the Web Shield is good, but the File System Shield isn’t (something along these lines). Vlk, can you explain? ??? How effective is it?

  1. No, it only scans those files that are accessed, run, either through autorun or user opening them, etc. The last thing you want is avast to scan the contents of a USB when you plug it in, it would take a long time you you had a 8GB drive or worse scan an external hard disk once you plugged it in.

  2. I rather doubt Vlk would make such a simplistic statement, since a) they use the same signature database and b) scan different areas so there really is no direct comparison.
