Hi everyone,I have some NDS games on a micro SD card, that someone downloaded for me.Iwant to transfer them onto my computer for safe keeping.I’ve heard that when you plug in an external drive like an SD card,if there is anything malicious on the drive it can launch/run itself before you scan it for threats,is this true.I also heard that you can stop this happening by disabling autoplay using tweakui. That makes no sense to me,as you cannot disable autoplay until after the drive has been inserted.I am really sorry if i am not making much sense and am answering my own questions. Thanks for any advice, and happy fathers day to all the dads.
No, this is not true. You can disable any drive at any time…
Dear Tech, thanks for the very fast response. So by unchecking the drive letter that belongs to the flash drive,it is safe to insert, and can then be scanned ?That sounds good. :
Besides disabling autoplay in windows.
Any device that is capable of autoplay can have autoplay temporarily disabled when you insert it by holding down the shift key and keeping it down whilst the hard disk activity light is on.
The problem with disabling a drive letter is that if you change the drive letter by inserting other usb drives, then autoplay will still work if the drive letter has changed.
Yes,I understand exactly what you mean.Thats very good advice. Thanks very much Tech and DavidR. ;D
Your welcome.
Yes, you can do that.
I’m not disabling the drive letter but just the autoplay feature… ???
I’m aware what you are trying to do. My wording implies disabling the drive letter which isn’t the intention, but disabling autoplay for a specified drive letter, when that device could end up using a different drive letter if you have more than one removable storage device.
So this would be nearer to the mark and I believe micky77 understood:
The problem with disabling autoplay for a specific drive letter is, if you change the drive letter by inserting other usb drives, then autoplay will still work if the drive letter has changed.
I see… but it’s not common that people insert fixed drives (or change partition). Generally, the input of a new USB drive will receive always the same letter. Ok, you can uncheck two or three ‘free’ letters in TweakUI and I think you’ll be covered about disabling autoplay features.
I find it just as easy to keep the shift key pressed whilst and autoplay device is either loaded or plugged in.
