Since I have upgraded Avast, Filezilla and FTP Commander are no longer able to connect to FTP sites that require a username and password; anonymous FTPs appear to work without a problem.
I have tried adding Filezilla to the Avast exclusion lists, but this does not have any affect. Does anyone know why Avast is blocking Filezilla and how to fix it?

If you have firewall rules related to avast or to those programs, delete them and test again. The firewall should “learn” to allow connections to avast and to those programs again. Please report back.
I just checked, as I also use FZ. No problems here.
Try this: avast! GUI → Web Shield → Expert Settings → Main Settings
Enable: Scan traffic from well-known browser processes only
