I am getting a notice that Avast [Home 4.5.523] finds Win32: Trojano-651 in a particular file.
The file is a data file used and created by a game that I’m playing.
This file has been on my machine for over a year, and is on other PCs in my home. Neither Norton nor MacAfee reports it as a virus-file on the other PCs.
This is the first time that Avast reported this as “infected” [last couple of weeks]; previous versions of Avast/virus def. files did not report it as infected.
The first time this happened, I deleted the “infected” file (it’s a __.dll file) and then downloaded a “clean” copy from the game mfg. But Avast reported the new version as infected too.
I could just ignore the file, but maybe there’s something else I should do??
PS. I’m not having any “suspicious” activity on the PC.

Thsi may be a false possitive, please send the file in a as a ziped/passworded archive to virus@avast.com .
Please mention that you think it is a false possitive and why, also mention what avast detects it as, and lastly please mention the password so they can get to/open the file.

You could also check the offending/suspect file at: Jotti - Multi engine on-line virus scanner www.virusscan.jotti.dhs.org if any other scanners here detect them it is less likely to be a false positive.
Just FYI, I have this problem too. The game involved is Demise (a hack-‘n’-slash dungeon crawl), and the file is demise.dll. I’ve had NAV on my system for a number of years, and no problem indicated with this file. When I look at the virus information in Avast, it states only that it is an EXE-infecting virus - no description of the virus and its effects is available. A Google search finds only a) a post on the Demise message boards about this Avast alert, and b) various links to the page on this site that lists the assorted viruses according to (I presume) virus signature release date - the one for this Trojan Horse virus was the 27-10-2004 release.
As suggested, I will send this to Avast tech support, suggesting that this may be a false positive; however, I would also like to see a bit more description of the various virus types, i.e. the sort of damage that they do, in the information files available within the program.
(Note: tried to upload the file to the scanner at Jotti, but my firewall prevented it from being passed on)
Forget my last post. When installing a newer version (or trying to, at least) of Demise, Avast took exception to the demise1.dll file, and buggered up the installation. Disabling Avast during installation was a temporary panacea; when running the game with Avast enabled, it buggered up the game.
I am uninstalling Avast. I don’t appreciate it screwing around with a legitimate program that I KNOW is not infected.
Nobody appreciates this… anyway, you took it too fast when it’s just a false positive… I have a lot with Ad-aware, SpyBot and AntiVir and I did not give up just because of this. I gave up of PestPatrol
Hey don’t give up on avast! Keep it unless you really can’t solve the problem.
