Firefox Portable

I’m trying the applications found at PortableApps.com - some of them which I found an excellent alternative to standard ones - and when checking FirefoxPortable I came along with this paragraph: (Seems the guy is really upsetted…)

"Trojan/Virus detected - AntiVir and Avast, on more than one occasion, have claimed there is a trojan or virus in the launcher. This is due to poor detection in both products that will occasionally mis-identify many NSIS-based applications as trojans. It will usually occur after a definitions update. You should contact your antivirus provider and let them know of their mistake. Do not contact me about it as I am well aware of Avast and AntiVir’s issues and can do nothing to fix them. You can either wait for them to fix the issue again or switch to a better antivirus package. "

I can tell two things:

  1. I scanned the executable file with latest avast! Pro version and database up-to-date and found none alert message.
  2. I like very much K too, but avast! is as good as it but lighter and faster

I’m wondering which antivirus software he is using…

Best, forum!!

Maybe avast for Linux.
Maybe an old version of avast virus database.
Maybe he is talking about the executable files ‘after’ being on the portable media and not the ‘setup’ (downloadable) file.
::slight_smile:

Perhaps you could comment on your experience with avast! on that post you found about FirefoxPortable.

Maybe “this guy” has right to be upsetted, too many false positives with anti virus programs ?
I have found quite a many times these programs to alarm about Portable Applications (last time it happened with F-Secure 2 weeks ago).

At least he has followed this forum and answered to questions: Win32:IstDnldr-AG in Portable Firefox

Apart from the fact that the reference you made is over a year old and the false positive detection was cleared up in the VPS update the next day, ‘martosurf’ isn’t reporting a problem with the current FirefoxPortable.exe of its launcher.

So you have to ask who long you remain upsetted (sic) over the issue, I’m sure they wouldn’t like it if someone suggested his product was flawed based on a year or more old version of the program.

If everyone recommended changing your AV for a false positive everyone would probably have run out of AVs to use. All AVs suffer from false positive detections to some extent (some don’t admit it but quietly update their signatures). What sets many apart is not denying they occur but admitting the fault and promptly correcting the problem.

This is the problem nowadays… To much things written on Internet each day… very few updated :stuck_out_tongue:
