Does anyone know how to use avast together with Fireturst B9 ? both want to use port 110.
Basically my mail goes to www.netaddress – gets picked up by mailwasher, processed by Bp and eventually ends up in the inbox of Outlook.
Everything works fine without B9 ar without avast but not both together.
Can anyone help ?

Both B9 and avast 4.1 want to intercept email and it is simply not possible for this to happen in the current 4.1 version of avast.
You could try the 4.5 beta version of avast as it now uses a different method of scanning incoming email so you can setup B9 as if avast didn’t exist.

I have purchased B9 and I have uninstalled it as I believe avast is the better option and B9 leaves unstealthed ports 25, 110.
The choice is yours, but there is lots of information on these forums so you can make an informed decision.

Have just changed to 4.5 beta ( no problems so far).
I then sent a message to myself and received it ok. The message had the outgoing clean message tag and the incoming clean message tag - so presumably that is proof that it was checked by avast. also the B9 message shows that the message was processed. As Netaddress also run mail thu a virus checker I will assume that I haven’t infected myslef ;D
You say that B9 leaves 25 and 110 unstealthed ?
When I check with http://scan.sygate.com/ I’m told that all ports ( including 25 and 110) are stealthed. Perhasp this is because I’m using a Netgear hardware firewall ? I don’t know.
Anyway thanks again - I will feel more secure with B9 back in the loop.

The hardware firewall/router will be the reason, I couldn’t get the ports stealthed using dial-up (spit).

If you want to be even safer, switch from outlook to thunderbird. http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/

If he is using Outlook for the additional functionality, Thunderbird is just an email client, Outlook is much more than that. So regardless of the additional protection, a loss of functionality would be worse.
Besides, with avast and B9 I think his bases are well covered.

You are so right-I did not take into consideration the additional functions that outlook has available. I was only thinking about the safety issue.
