I installed a parent security program, “KidsWatch”. BUT after the kids login the browswer does not connect to the internet at all.
KidsWatch says, “A FIREWALL that disallows access to the Web Filtering server will result in all external sites being blocked”. I think this is what’s happening. the web filter server maintains the list of blocked (black-list) sites.
HOWEVER, if I follow these steps I CAN get the browswer to work:
STOP the firewall
launch the browser
START the fire wall.
After these steps web filtering works, sites are accessible but black-list sites are blocked by Kidswatch as it should be. BUT, if I reboot the computer I have to repeat the three steps to get it back working again.
How can I fix the firewall so I do not have to go through these steps? IDEAS?
Regards, Michael
Does the thing work as a local proxy? If you, so need to add its port to the list of monitored ports and also uncheck the ignore local communication checkbox - in Settings - Troubleshooting - Redirect settings section.
@the OP: as soon as you get 20 posts, you’ll be able to modify your profile so change your username, and hide your email, unless you like to get spammed
OK, to add to the list of monitored ports in Avast:
I’d go to Settings, Troubleshooting, Redirect, and in the Web box, add the port to the list I see in the “HTT ports” box, where the list of ports are separated by comas. Sound correct?
( PS: Communication is the hardest part! For example, there is no list of “Monitored Ports”. One has to know in advance that the WEB box in Redirect is actually a list of monitored ports. The text presented to the user does not define the list as such. Classic IT / User communication issue, no? )
Ugh, inserting the port# as a monitored port did not work.
About FIREWALLs, this is all the KidsWatch help says,
“If you are using the Microsoft Firewall included with Windows XP SP2, the Remote application may not function. This firewall blocks the remote computer, which is an RPC server using port 4566. To allow communication through port 4566, and also allow the Remote application to communicate to the target computer, follow the instructions below. To set the firewall to allow port 4566.”
I am not using MS Firewall, it is turned off. I am not sure of next move?
Again, the brower and access to internet works fine if I:
STOP the firewall, lauch the browser, close the browser, reSTART the firewall.
Aftewards access is fine. When I reboot, intenet access is again blocked and I have to repeat above steps. ??
more,… I normally use Google Chrome. Now I tried I-Explorer and a message said there was a problem with an add on from Avast, regarding “aswWEBrepIE.dll”
Well, in that case, I suggest you contact KidsWatch vendor and ask there about compatibility issues. And please do not distract this thread with unrelated WebRep issues.
Note: You are STILL exposing your email to spammers in multiple ways.
I will contact KidsWatch and Avast Support. Thanks for your time and attention.
Rather than distract, I have simply pursued a solution in this thread. However, the several posts about spam/email are a distraction, despite good intentions. I am surprized that in an Avast support forum, I am being warned that it is vulnerable to spamers. Kind of ironic.
Please post back when there is some progress with KidsWatch vendor.
Uh. Sticking your email in plaintext on ANY website is vulnerable to spammers. You even used it for your forum name - really hard to find a way that would expose it more. :
