Firewall for Vista x64, 64 bit to run with Avast?

I am trying to find a firewall app, unti the Avast Firewall I just read about, that will work on Vista Ult, 64 bit. Have just come back to Avast after another failed try with no kaspersonality (?:frowning: he, he. Anyhow, I dont like Comdod any more cuz the way they want to take over everything and you have to re-disable so many things even after telling it not to in the first place.

BLAH!!! Yes, I would like to find a firewall app that is JUST a firewall, maybe a pop up blocker too, but I dont need anything that Avast does a great job of itself…

agaain, it needs to be 64 bit. I was not at all happy when KIS installed in my x86 folder :(. I use a 64 bit OS for a reason, ya know. ;)))

Why not just use the Vista firewall but enable outbound protection (disabled by default), it isn’t very user friendly, but there is a tool that makes it easier, though I’m not sure if that works on 64bit systems.

I really am hoping for like REAL pop up blocking. I dont care what anyone say’s; I have NEVER been able to just MS popup blocker to STOP pop ups…also ad blocking is VERY important as well. While it can be argued that Avast will most likely deal with ANY bad code that comes through via either of those means, I just dont want to be bothered by either …when I want. So, its usually a firewall app, and I also enjoy being able to set a little bit more ‘specialized’ firewall rules than I can with MS firewall, at least with my knowledge.

Maybe if I felt a lil bit more trusting of MS and their ‘stable’ final versions (i dont mean to be sarcastic, but I just reinstalled from scratch an…). Ya know, ya go by the way they seem to run. I am almost ready to hakinstosh, I swear!

Beggars can’t be choosers ;D

I’m sure my friend google should be able to point you in the right direction, I just cave you one option.

Why not use something like Firefox or Opera as both have pop-up blockers and firefox also has a whole slew of add-ons to back that up AdBlock Plus, etc. It is a very long time since I have seen a pop-up in firefox.

as soon as the internet stops using MS protocolling I will be okay with other browsers. Too many sites that dont quite work the same in ANY other browser. My bank in Utah wont even load if its not IE(no faking it)!!! I am not asking for any ONE specific app but more along the linez which ones run with Avast(or just dont have some kinda AV prebilt into it, other than pop up an ad blocking) and ARE DEFINTLY 64 bit… I was hoping some Avast users that had firewalls running well with theirs that fit the category might shout out …it’s reall alarming to have software that just doesnt 64 bit install cause they built a bad installer. And alot of companies just say Vista Okay but not wether its 64 bit, too.

Is there something wrong with my question? I am not meaning any rudeness, just would like to keep to the post topic, if thats okay. I understand MANY people are just fine with the Windows firewall. Usually I am. I would like more options but Avast! is a requirement in my security.

Tired of leaving cause another app I have wont stop its AV fully, so I have to try theirs. I just want a firewall (maybe/maybe not Windows FW) that runs well with Avast and is 64 bit.

So BEING one who’s main topic is AVAST …and google is not the help you would hope because of thje exact reasoins described above… I am asking as one who wants to continue to use Avast, what other Avast users that run on a 64 bit platform may/may not have as a third party firewall?

(an google iz my only search engine, they are my friend to, but Im not using google Avast …am I.)

Vista firewall works well. In an administrator account go to the start menu, in the search area type Windows Firewall with… and you will see Windows Firewall with Advanced Security at the top. Click on that and you can have specialized rules in each of the profiles for the firewall. If it is too complicated for you then try Vista Firewall Control - it has a x64 version and makes the outbound control application based instead of rule based.

If you use browsers that conform to standards then you shouldn’t find many sites that ‘don’t’ conform to wc3 standards as even MS now recognise that they have to conform to standards as IE7 made a move in that direction and some sites didn’t display as designed. This is more so in IE8 as it is almost standards compliant.

Sites that aren’t complying to standards will find that even IE won’t display them as intended, with exception of older versions of IE. They simply can’t afford to turn that potential volume away from their door. So it is already happening.

I have been using firefox for years now and yes in the early days some sites didn’t display well, but now that is very rare. For that rare occasion I use the IE Tab firefox add-on when I stay within firefox but open that tab using the IE engine.

Have I just asked the wrong question here? I know the information I am looking for would plrobably be more suitable for some kind of forum for just 64 bit software or security or something, but not everyone there is gonna also have Avast!. Thats the ONE program I know runs great. I suppose since this is such a dilema to get answered here; “What Vista x64 users who ALSO use Avast use a different firewall other than the one that came with Vista; and what iis it…?”

I AM JUST TIRED OF DOING A SEARCH ON GOOGLE ONLY TO COME UP WITH AN APP THAT ISNT X64 BIT OR HAS A BUNCH OF OTHER PRE-BUILT STUFF IN IT. Is this really so bad to want to NOT change my VERY VERY trusted antivirus solution in the process? Why is this really all that difficult to get any other answer than the ONE (that includes just adding Vista FW Control, since the normal fw isn’t part of what Im asking).

Im not asking for any third prty support or official statements from Avast!.

Well excuse me for bothering, to even attempt to give an answer, wasting both your time and mine then.

I was just thinking the same thing myself.

The Vista Firewall Control from SphinxSoftware works well and so what if it is not X64 bit as there are few X64 bit applications available yet as it is new technology and not many people have it.

Hi,since you don’t specify free or paid…
I use outpost pro 2009 on vistax64 home premium; it’s a true 64bit app. Sorry , can’t speak of the web control feature since I haven’t used it.
hope this helps, tim

this looks nice…thank you. I do not care about free or paid. I care about 64 bit and works.

do you use their anti malware engine as well when running wioth avast?

Hi, no I do not. Outpost detects other products during install and disables its own realtime spyware component.
hope this helps, tim

hyjaxltd, from time to time, the antispyware of Outpost conflicts with avast detection. Better if you disable it.
Note that on July, avast will have a 64bits firewall. Maybe you could stand with Windows firewall until there

Well normally when you install Outpost Firewall it detects avast and suggests disabling the OP anti-spyware for compatibility. It did on my new system when I installed Outpost Firewall Pro 2009, avast having been installed first.

I had no idea it was that close!!! I can wait with what I got. And about the whole MS holding the internet hostage attitude; it comes from Utah …I dont know, maybe Bill Gates stole his wife away from some missonary and there like WE’LL TAKE HER BACK…ONE ZERO POINT STOCK AT AT A TIME…AH, HA, HA, HA!!! I mean they introduced Donny and Maria Osmond (brother and sister) as the First Couple of Utah??? Like Robin Williams said ‘Ahh…only in Arknsas.’ Thanks for letting me know how far off…am i re-tar-ded or have i just not looked for beat testing?
