Just became an Avast user. For the last week could not figure out why I could not download my emails from an unsecured POP3 user. Did not have this problem with AVG on other computer. Found out, by process of elimination, that it was Avast that was causing the problem even though my settings for my email was “never” for secure transmission.
Any suggestions on how I can keep my firewall active and still use both the internet and emails?l
My system went down and I am re-configuring my daughter’s laptop that she gave me in the interim. She originally had Avast but it was expired since she has not used this system for the last 2 years.
I automatically went for Avast since it asked me if I wanted to update and purchased the Internet security version. It did not dawn on me to remove the older version. Can I remove the current version and will it remove any remmanants of the older version as well?
If I do remove Avast can I download again and re-use the original key?

Yes, and no. You should use the removal tool as well. Link for download plus instructions here: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
Also, be sure to remove the 4.8 and 5 versions with that tool just to be sure.

Followed the above instructions and the result was quite positive. Found and removed an Avast 4.0 Home Edition along with the last 5.0 version. Re-installed Avast 5.0 and updated the definitions, etc.
However, my problem still persists. The only way I can get to the internet and/or my mail is to knock down the shields. Currently my shields are down or I could not get this message out.
Any further instructions, or, is the situation hopeless?
Scythe944, CharleyO,and Yodaosan thanks for your help. I have no idea s to why but it now works. After re-installing I could not get anywhere but did have to answer some rather urgent emails so I suspended the firewall for 10 minutes.
Needless to say it took longer than the 10 minutes to answer all the emails and without realizing it the system was working; i.e., the firewall re-installed and I did not realize it but everything was working.
I decided to reboot the system and see if I could go on without “suspending” and it worked. Today when I logged on, no problem. Go figure.
Once again, thanks.
