what errors do you get?
have you just installed avast?
Try this…
Set avast! to: Direct Connection (No Proxy)
Error: Cannot connect to server.
Yes, I have it set to Direct connection.
No, I have not just installed Avast. Have had it for years and all of the sudden this just started happening. Any suggestions?
I am running Windows Vista SP2…It is the Free version of Avast Home…here is what the error report said when I tried to repair Avast and do an update:
I have installed malwarebytes and outpost firewall recently, but that was AFTER the updates stopped working…The only things I have running are Winpatrol (but avast used to update no problem when winpatrol was running and windows firewall, but that is OFF. so basically I dont recall installing any new software, avast just stopped updating and it can’t connect to the server for some reason. No new router. but i am using AirportEXTREME just fyi. I have tried uninstalling avast and reinstalling it and that doesn’t work either.

I followed your 4 steps. But is still says it cannot connect to download avast364.com
Did you run the uninstall utility in safe mode…??
Yes, i ran the uninstall in safe mode. I followed the directions step by step. I don’t know what else to try. I guess I can’t use avast anymore and will have to find another antivirus program if I can’t get avast to update anymore.
Have you tried disabling the avast! firewall to see if that’s where the problem lies ???
Just tried that it still says: Cannot connect to download 310.avast.com
Have you set all three avast processes - AVAST.SETUP, AVASTSVC.EXE, AVASTUI.EXE to allow all in the applications rules of Outpost ? double click on the processes and set to allow all then click apply.

Yes, I just did that as well. Still won’t connect to server. This started happening before installing outpost.
Is it possible that even though Windows Firewall is Off…maybe it is still blocking avast? Even though in the windows firewall settings I have it set to allow and it is off?
Suggestions?
I finally figured it out! I had to uninstall Windows Live OneCare. That must have been blocking it, even though it was OFF and disabled. Anyway, the definitions updated once I restarted after the uninstall of WL1Care. thanks everyone!
Glad you found the problem, we should have asked if you had any other security software doesn’t matter if there disabled as there’s usually hidden processes and low level drivers that are still active which cause the conflicts as you now know well
Should I install Microsoft Security Essentials now that I uninstalled Windows Live one care? Or is Outpost Firewall/Maleware/Avast good enough?
Whatever you do, don’t install MSE as you would then be installing two resident anti-viruses and their low level drivers could conflict.
Just check my signature and you will find it answers your OR question.
I did in Reply #4.
Sorry, I didn’t know I had to uninstall Windows Live One Care…I thought I could just disable it and it wouldn’t block anything.
