Thank you Asyn for your advice, however although I did Repair and Reboot, I still have the same Risk warning anf firewall is still off and I cannot change it in Settings.
I also went to Modify in Control Panel and ticked the box for Secure dns, but it made no difference.
If there are any Avast monitors reading the forum would appreciate your help.
Dear Asyn, Papinianos and EssexBoy, thank you for your replies and I will endeavour to answer them as clearly as I can.
Which Avast…? I think it is Pro, I pay $50AUD a year for it
Which version…?..I only know it updated to 2016, I couldn’t see what version it is.
OS…? Windows XP. I think it is 32 Bit…?
SP/Build…?..sorry don’t understand the question
Other security related software installed…?..none
Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?..I had free AVG before Avast.
Jean110, I also had the same problem. Repair and reboot did not work for me either, so I followed essexboy instructions above of uninstall in safe mode and then reinstall and I am happy to say that this finally fixed it. Hope it works for you also
It may work for Jean110 provided AVG was properly removed before Avast was installed. If AVG was not properly removed,
simply doing a clean install of Avast isn’t the answer.
I am just trying to learn more, so please don’t take this any other way except curiosity… but why would AVG cause conflict now when Jean110 has been using Avast for 2-3 years now and the problem with firewall only started about a week ago?
Thank you for all your help. I have had family issues keeping me away from my PC. At present I have Avast looking at it. I will let you know how i get on.
I am happy to report that my Firewall is now Turned On
The Avast guy was a great help.
He sent me a link to uninstall, then reboot, then another link to reinstall which all worked well.
The only tricky bit for me (not being a geek) was inserting my license into the free version that I had downloaded. However again i got good instructions from Avast guy and all is now well
It ended up being very similar to what Essexboy suggested but with a little more detail which I needed.
If you can’t solve your problems here, go direct to Avast. They may take a couple of days to reply but are very helpful when they do.
Thanks again for all your advice. Have a great day
