I went into add/remove programs, tried to run “repair” but it did not allow that, but then clicked on the update button right above repair, and it downloaded a fresh version of the software. After restarting…it is all now working.
i must have had vestiges of the free version in the way of the internet professional version.
For future reference: Just in case, if you face the same issue follow the below steps.
Make sure that you have removed AVG completely from the computer. You can use the removal tool from AVG.
If you have 32 bit O.S download and run this.
http://download.avg.com/filedir/util/support/avg_remover_stf_x86_2011_1322.exe
Else
http://download.avg.com/filedir/util/support/avg_remover_stf_x64_2011_1322.exe
Once you remove AVG you need to reboot the machine.
2)You need need to remove Avast too from the computer. Make sure, you remove using avast! Removal tool. So reboot the machine into safemode then download and run http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe.
Once done reboot again. This time into normal mode.
Download the latest version of avast! Internet Security and reinstall it again. This time the issue will be fixed.
Hope you are happy with avast! Have a wonderful day Good k@rma!
As the OP has stated that his system is now working what is the point in suggesting for him to remove and reinstall avast ???
spanz as Tech suggested you should run the uninstall tool for avg from the link he provided, both 32 and 64 bit tools are provided within the supplied link.
I then installed the fresh version of the software. It seemed like it thought I was still using the free antivirus version, rather than the internet security version, even though it liked the new license (allowed me to at least see the firewall page). I ran update from the add/remove programs in control panel, and it did a fresh install on top of the old one, and the firewall then worked.
Oddly, “repair” in add/remove programs would not run on avast.
Another note: the windows firewall can be on or off, that was not the problem when installing the software. Avast automatically turns the windows firewall off.
I am hoping that Avast continues to support windows xp 64 bit with this software long into the future!!!
@ iyogisolutions1 Why uninstall avast and AVG when all that needs to be removed is AVG?
Wouldn’t it be better to download the avast uninstaller and “save” to HDD before going
into “safe mode”?
Also when uninstalling it is best to disconnect from the internet before going into safe
mode! Then, if needed, re-connect to internet then and only then install the software.
All this is mute since the OP needed to remove AVG and “not” avast.
One more thing...I learned a long time ago it's best to let someone with more stars to
provide the assistance. ???
