Not good news, I think: OTL “stopped responding”. I got a Microsoft message that OTL has stopped working, and a prompt to close the program. I have not clicked to close program yet. The desktop looks blank, as you predicted. What now??

That may be MBAM blocking it… Is it stuck on killing processes at the bottom ?

If so rerun the OTL fix from safe mode where MBAM is not active

I don’t know. I see empty temp and reboot on the custom scan screen. should I go head and try again in safe mode?

Yes please

ok. So it seemed to be doing something for about 2 seconds. How do I know it’s done?

nvm…after a few minutes a blue line started running across the bottom…

Essexboy, I am beyond impressed and thankful. I am online.

My Avast says it updated. Should I take further precautions? I am replacing the computer very soon, so not interested in a big investment, but also don’t want to go thru this again! Do you think I had a virus or malware?

Could you now confirm that windows updates is working and you are happy with the performance. I believe it was a corruption within the DNS

Windows updated without any issues. The computer seems to be functioning well. Probably faster than it has in a while

OK lets clear my rubbish

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Delete minitoolbox from the desktop

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

Clear Restore Points

Go Start > All Programmes > Accessories > System tools
Right click Disc Cleanup and select run as administrator
When it pops up at the first prompt select OK after it has done some calculations the tabs will appear
Select More Options tab
Press Sytem Restore and Shadow Copies Cleanup button
