Firewall Settings

I want to purchase avast! but am unsure of how to do one thing. I have my Firewall set to Business and to “ask”. However, when I use Limewire, for instance, avast! allows it to operate without asking me to let it. How do I make avast! ask before allowing programs like Limewire to run. (and then whether to let it run just this once or permanently)

I assume you mean that your firewall prompts you, asking if you want to let certain programs connect to the internet (rather than run). Only avast! Internet Security contains a firewall, unless I’m terribly mistaken. Instead, avast! will scan every executable (.exe) file, and lots of others, as soon as they run in order to make sure they are valid programs and not malware and whatnot.

Yes, that is what I am using, the home free version of Avast! Internet Security. Are you saying I have to purchase in order to get that feature?

3 Avast! versions. (apart from ver.4’s)
Avast! Free----Avast! Pro----Avast! Internet Security
Which one do you have? The first is free, the other 2 have free trial, but cost $$$ for a year license.

It appears you want to stop limewire from running at startup, is that it? That is just not Avast!'s job, if that is indeed what you mean, no matter what version you have.
If you cant do that through Windows, Ccleaner can handle disabling it at startup>>

My user interface says Avast Internet Security. I’ll go back with McAfee then. It pops a window up when a program wishes to start and asks you if you want to allow it to run once or permanently w/internet access.

Did you go into the firewall expert settings and change “auto-decide” to “ask”? You can also set the level of trust for applications on the “application rules” tab under the firewall.
