Firewall turned off by upgrade to Windows 8.1

A pox on Microsoft! My wife has just done the upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1, and that process seems to have sabotaged our Avast firewall. This is Avast Premier 2015, which AFAIK is up to date. Both Windows Defender and Windows Firewall are OFF.

When we click on the Avast button, it tells us that Avast firewall is turned off. Nothing happens when I click on “turn on” until I click it a second time, when eventually the user account control warning box “do you want to allow this program to make changes to this computer?” appears in respect of Avast Virus Scanner. Clicking on “YES” eventually results in a box coming up saying “Unable To Start Firewall”.

Any ideas how we solve this problem please guys?

Try a repair of Avast then reboot the system.

Why upgrade to Win8.1 when you could have upgraded to Win10 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Alas, no option to repair!

I have no idea why my wife decided to do the upgrade to 8.1, but neither of us is keen to tangle with W10 until it’s been out a while longer.

Woo hoo! That did the business

Thank you for your help, gentlemen.

You’re welcome
