A firewall is essential, avast has Network Shield but this isn’t a firewall:
Network Shield. It protects the computer from the attacks of Internet worms (e.g. Blaster, Sasser, etc.)
Zone Alarm free http://www.zonelabs.com works fine with avast (as it doesn’t have the Privacy feature that causes problems for web shield) and has a reasonably friendly user interface. There are others, Comodo, Jetico, Sunbelt Kerio, etc.
See some firewall tests for comparison, some are freeware but many are paid for versions http://www.firewallleaktester.com/tests.php. Also see http://www.thefreecountry.com/security/firewalls.shtml
Any malware that manages to get past your defences will have free reign to connect to the internet to either download more of the same, pass your personal data (user names, passwords, keylogger retrieved data, etc.) or open a backdoor to your computer, so outbound protection is essential.
All the best security will NOT help if you continue to use
the trojan-infested Limewire; best to switch to the safer
and cleaner Shareaza at www.shareaza.com .
You should read the "discussion" about Limewire at :
www.castlecops.com/postlite153185-limewire.html .
I always thought it was NOT safe to download any programs with any p2p programs?
I have not used limewire with many months in my computer.
Used it only to download mp3 music (admittedly all not legal, lol)
But it to have a rootkit? Maybe the later version.
I did run recently F-secure’s blacklight and it did not found any.
Should I now reformat my PC, cause limewire is installed in it ???
I recommend ZoneAlarm Freeware for anyone doesn’t know much about computers & firewalls. My #1 recommendation is Jetico Personal Firewall. It is a full free firewall, not a free version of a pay for firewall with some features disabled. It takes a little effort & patience to configure & use. Here is a good website to learn what to allow & what not to allow. http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/ I think everyone will benefit from it even if they don’t use Jetico. Jetico is very lite on system resources.
For free anti-spyware I recommend:
-Lavasoft Ad-Aware
-Spybot Search and Destroy
-Ewido Free
-SpywareBlaster
-SpywareGuard (even though not updated since 2004, it does a good job & no conflicts)
-Windows Defender
-Winpatrol
Without hesitation I whole heartedly recommend avast! anti-virus. It is time for me to renew my updating license. All the time I’ve used avast! my computer has been excellently protected. Everyone that has taken my recommendations has a clean computer. A co-worker said avast! Home Edition removed a multitude of viruses that his isp (cable) provided anti-virus couldn’t or wouldn’t remove. He can’t believe free software can be so good.

Hi smajser, http://www.wilderssecurity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=31 is a good place to read and ask about the jetico firewall. There is a person there that goes by “Stem” that is the jetico guru and is very helpful in answering questions about this firewall.
Hope this helps.
Hi smajser
if you have another firewall besides the windows firewall-turn it off(just a incoming firewall anyway) 8)
for true security-you need a firewall that has both incoming and outgoing protection :
hope this helped in someway…
