First time user help w- 2nd attempt download

Hi ???

I have tried to download home ed. without success for the 2nd time

It says publisher could not be verified do you still want to run?
I click yes

Then it won’t execute - says something like cannot access and/or corrupt files
My old virus program is still active [not avast]
Could it be stopping the execution/zip extraction??
I’m in the middle of a new download now - so will get back here if it doesn’t unzip for the THIRD time

If this continues - I’ll just have to stay with my old virus program…aarggh
Thx for help

OK
It won’t run…for 3rd time :-X

This is the error message:
Error 1006 [000003EE]
Last performed operation was:
opening the self-extract archive
Try to download set-up file again

Then it says empty cache etc [which I keep doing]

I’m on dialup using Explorer with XP

I’m getting weary of trying to download avast… :stuck_out_tongue:

Where are downloading from? I down loaded from here last night, no problems http://avast.com/eng/programs.html

I didn’t get a zip file just an exe about 12mb

Thanks
I just went to the free download page - not sure of the link

Why does it make a difference? :stuck_out_tongue:

Some are bogus downloads. There was post awhile ago, about someone not being able to download from a particular link. I thought perhaps this was your problem also. The link I gave you is an avast download page.

Gotcha

Now I’m wondering -it doesn’t say if I should register first or download first – then register

I was going to register after the download
Could that be the problem???

No, it shouldn’t matter, as avast has a 60 day free trial for home or pro.

Well thanks but it may be that I’ll have to give up -
My other free virus program expires today - and because
I was having a similar problem d/loading a new version of that one too - someone referred me to avast [which I would prefer]

Maybe something’s wrong in my pewter but I don’t have a clue how to find it.

I’m at a total loss now and by tonight I won’t have any virus program at all…

Are you downloading the file to your hard disk first (right click and select, Save As) before installing it or are you trying to Run directly from the download link ?

I think this might be what you are trying and possibly what might cause the problem.

  1. This confirms to me that you are trying to run rather than download to your hdd as it (IE) is trying to verify the publisher.

  2. Trying to Run/Install a second AV whilst the first is still install is fraught with possibility of conflict. That is why you should download to your HDD not try to run, go off-line and uninstall the existing AV, reboot and install avast.

  3. Your existing AV is most certainly getting in the way, what is your old AV ?

Thanks for helping
Yes - when I click on download avast - a box comes up and I click RUN

Yes - I have another AV program [I want to dump AVG program - it expires today]

So what you say makes sense
I should r/click and save to desktop
go offline
uninstall AVG

So I won’t have to go back online [unprotected] to install free version of Avast, right??

Makes sense to me - here I go thanks and I think I love you! ;D

That’s right save the file to your hard disk, desktop is fine, I have a folder ‘Downloads’ easy to remember and find again for any downloaded files.

Correct this procedure (or steps) is to ensure there is no need to go on-line unprotected.

Let us know how you get on, welcome to the forums.
