→ DON’T delete it (because then it’s not possible to undo any changes if the system is not working properly anymore), especially if you don’t really know what you are doing
I saw that post today and I wished I had seen that one first before I delete it :-[
I knew something was wrong when I couldn’t use avast to scan. So I used system restore back 3 days. I was able to use avast to scan…avast found one it was DSME family virus\worm\malware and I had it moved to chest. It was hiding from c:\windows$NtServicePackUninstall$\0001
I had it written down.
I turned off system restore, deleted infected file, reboot and then turn on system restore.
I was disappointed when avast didn’t alert me right away but what do I know?
Everything seems to be fine, I hope…Anything else I need to do? This is my first time. I am not very knowledgeable with pc but I am doing best as I can…I appreciate any help…Thanks! Rose
Sorry I forgot…I have windows xp I have microsoft updates since yesterday I have avast 4.6 spysweeper, spywareblaster, adaware se, zone alarm free and winpatrol
I think you have probably solved your problem but to be sure, you might want to run a scan once more since you have system restore on again. If the problem is back, please post again. And even if it’s not back, we would not mind a post to know this, too.
You have a nice supply of security programs and the only one I would ad is ewido which is very good with trojans, worms, & some dialers. Be sure to update these programs once a week and then run a scan with them all.
Thank you for replying back…that make me feel better knowing I did ok for first time. Yes I already scanned avast again and no more virus lurking around…Next time (hope not!)I will not delete quickly, I know now…
I don’t know anything about ewido but I will take your word for it. I just have to find a link. ewido is friendly user and easy to understand?
I don’t have any problems with my pc now…it is back the way it used to be hugs, Rose
Sorry, ramblinrose, but I should have included the link to ewido. Here is the link to the home page so that you can read about it’s features. From there you can go to the download page. Yes, it is easy to use. After the 14 day trial period, you can disable the Guard resident and continue using the regular scanner for free … or you can pay to keep Guard resident active with auto-updates.
Thank you for that link! I have been looking ;D Now I have to take a look over there…see what’s it can do. So I am guessing that it will be compatible with avast and all other programs I have? Do you use all your shields on avast? Someone told me I should leave everything off except standard shield but I didn’t. What do you think? Thank you! hugs, Rose
Hello I came back from ewido site and I read that most of my programs will be compatible…I download it but I haven’t open set up yet.
I have one important question about avast scanning…whenever I scan, I usually don’t use archives. I know I should but I tried to use archives before. For some reason avast was unable to scan in archives. So I will wait to hear what you says about this…hugs, Rose ???
avast can scan arquives. But avast (and a lot of other antivirus) does not scan passworded archives.
You should scan arquives and ignore the ones are passworded.
And not skip scanning all arquives just because some of them couldn’t be scanned
Ok I am not sure I understand about password archives which I never used. Anyway I went to start scan for archives and found out I can’t click on start scan!Hourglass stay up won’t do nothing I was like, now what?? It was fine not too long ago…I used simple user interface.I don’t understand what’s wrong now? I really don’t want to use system restore again and I had just download microsoft updates again today. I opened setup of ewido moments ago and I am impressed with it, it found 3 infected files and had those 3 cleaned and now in quarantine. I thought that will take care of avast but it didn’t. I still can’t scan avast was not responding I had to use task manager to close it. What to do now??? Please advise me…I had no idea…I will be watching posts anxiously, Rose
Some programs use automatically, they password their archives: SpyBot, Ad-aware, etc.
Strange… Doesn’t the scanning even started?
Do you remember the name of the files cleaned by ewido? And the virus (infection) name?
Can you repair your avast installation?
Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Change/Remove
Then choosing the option Repair.
You must be connected to Internet to do this.
OK Now I understand about password archives… I do have spybot, adaware se, microsoft anti-spyware, spysweeper, etc…wish I know how to use as signature so everyone know what I have on my pc.
No, I clicked on start scan, hourglass showed up and won’t start and stay that way until I close it by using task manager and read that avast not responding.
When I did scan avast after I did system restore but now avast can’t scan again.
avast found one virus and I deleted it please look at my post #1
ewdio cleaned 3 infected files was + Scan result:
C:\WINDOWS\cpbrkpie.ocx -> Adware.Coupons : Cleaned with backup
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hgqhp.exe -> Downloader.Agent.tc : Cleaned with backup
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SetupCarnival.exe -> Adware.Casino : Cleaned with backup
I copy and paste this is ok?
I will try to see if I can repair avast. I hope that will help…I will post back later…Rose
Ok I am back again…I clicked repair that you suggested and it didn’t work. So now what? :‘( :’( Does that mean my pc is no longer protected? Even though I can still see blue ball that says 6 running…I should go to HouseCall online I will be back later again…Rose
I don’t think I explained clearly so let me try again…
I opened up avast (simple user interface)I waited for avast load up and I clicked on folders that is where it stopped! Hourglass stayed on it will not responded…I had to use task manager to end it. I went to add/remove program to repair and it didn’t help.
I also went to Housecall to scan for virus and it found nothing…
I can see blue ball moving around so I know it must be working and updating is fine too.
So what is the problem??? Why can I click on folders to get it start? OK I hope I explained it well. BTW I like that ewido program very easy to use and easy to understand. I really don’t want to use system restore again…everything is working now except avast…please help Thank you, Rose
It seems from your 1st post in this thread that you
DELETED the virus AFTER turning OFF System Restore
"I turned off system restore, deleted infected file, reboot and then turn on system restore. " So it appears you
DELETED a 2nd time instead of putting it in the "Chest" !?
The usual advise is to put the virus in the "Chest", wait a
couple of weeks to see if there are any adverse
reactions to your computer, then if there are none after
that period of time, THEN consider "deleting" it .
As to HOW to get a "signature" for your posts here, click
"profile" on the top line, then click "Forum Profile
Information" in the left-hand menu & go to the "signature"
block and put in the info .
Since you have WinPatrol, you may want to ask on their
forums at www.castlecops.com about what programs
are "compatible" with it !? Quite a while ago I posted a
question like that and "BillP" answered & from his info
it seemed his program was unnecessary with my security
programs. Also SpywareBlaster has a "System Snapshot"
feature that seems similar to the main premise of
WinPatrol; have you "activated" that portion of
SpywareBlaster ?
Hi Spiritsongs, first I want to thank you for trying to help. I am sorry I didn’t make myself clear on post#1 my mistake… When avast found a virus, I had it moved to chest right away ( I didn’t delete)…then I turned off system restore, and went to avast, I deleted it from the chest, rebooted, and turn on system restore again. My another mistake, I should have wait instead of delete right away but I didn’t know. It was my first virus since I had pc 2 years I know now…
Now I wished I had snapshot of spywareblaster but I didn’t do it. I will wait until I am sure my pc is really clean. So far it is. But I am worried about my avast. I really like my avast and I don’t know what I have to do now…
I will try to use that signature now. Thanks…As for Winpatrol, I had it for almost 2 years with no problem but I will check it out with forum just in case…
I hope someone can help me out on what to do with my avast…Rose
Ok I am back again ??? I tried avast I usually start with clicking on folders to scan but this time I click local hard disks I was able to scan but I’d prefer to use folders. Anyone? Or maybe I should try schedule boot-time scan? Boy I have been at this all day and all nite, I am tired so I will sign off and see you later next day…Hopefully someone can help me…or I might have to reinstall avast? I will need detailed instructions how to do that. I have never done it before. Thanks, Rose
I find the "Simple User Interface" confusing ( Except for
"1. : Select the areas to scan " ); after clicking the symbols
for "Local drives" & "Folders" and making the choices there,
I then click the "^" in the upper-left hand portion of the
GUI, click "Start Scan" & put my mouse on the 3 menu items
and make my choices for each one. Then I start the scan.
P.S. You can select BOTH "Local drives" AND "Folders" to
be done on one scan .
Yes I can select local hard disks and able to scan BUT cannot select folders! When I do that, it stop responding hourglass stay on, I have to use a task manager to close it.
Now I got a new problem back to where it first started it all. In My Documents folder, on the left hand column (classic style) where it says file and folder tasks I click one file then I select move this file guess what? Hourglass stay on! Will not responding same with copy this file! But I can create a new folder, delete, email.etc Onlymove this file and copy this file I cannot…
I give up!! If no one else can help me then I will have to go to repair shop. I don’t know how to do anything else. but no one is suggesting that I should do highjack this program. I never use it before. I already did system restore yesterday and it was fine but only few hours then it was back same problems… Rose
Well… ??? I guessed everyone can’t help me then I will have to go support@avast.com and then go to tech repair shop >:( I hate to spend money when I know surely there must be something simple to fix!!! Thanks for all your help. I appreciated it…Rose
Can you use the “Open file” dialog in other programs? I mean, if you e.g. start Notepad and select File/Open from the menu - does the “Open” dialog appear and does it work correctly?
