Fix for WebShield download issues

On Win 7 Home Premium SP1 French, Firefox 26, FlashPlayer plugin 11.9.900.170, I have big issues (video sites, ADSL rate test, …) after having updated Avast (Free, French) from 2013.8.0.1504 to 2014.9.0.2011.
All become Ok, if I desactivate the WebShield.

So, I have made the following actions :

  1. Adding 2 new files (aswstm.sys 9.0.2011.265, and aswstm.sys.sum), made automatically by Avast, according Lucas post, dated 20 Dec 2013
    No results

  2. Activating “Scan the traffic from known browser only” in WebShield.
No results; So I turned back desactivating this line.

  3. Implementing the Lucas patch (post, dated 31 Dec 2013) : replacing the 2 files (aswStreamFilter.dll, and aswStreamFilter.dll.sum) by the new files provided by Lucas.
    I have let the 2 new files aswstm.sys, aswstm.sys.sum
A little improvment; Before : no videos seen, after : videos seen during 20-30 s, then freeze.

  4. Implementing the change of WebShield.ini (adding UseStreamFilter=0), in the 2 identical files WebShield.ini located in C:\ProgramData\Alwil Software\Avast5 and C:\Users\All Users\Alwil Software\Avast5 (I did not change the WebShield.ini file, smaller and dated 8 May 2011, located in C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\DATA).
I have kept the modifications made in 1) and 3)
All is Ok, in “old fashion” Avast mode according Lucas, but the most important is to have a WebShield activated.

I hope an update of Avast will rapidly solve the problem.

Thanks to everybody in this forum.

All the fixes has been incorporated into the beta. See here:http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=144768.0

Same here with me. Remember when there was an issue with the web shield and a few members or tech support suggested to turn off the web shield, which I did and the problems went away. After reading this thread, I went back to see if the web shield was turned back on and it was. Thank goodness, as I rather not mess around with anything on Avast and get it all messed up. Thank YOU for fixing the web shield issue.

Thanks Bob, and sorry for the wrong link. It tends to be little clumsy when writting from my phone. Lukas

You’re braver than I. I’ll read replies on my phone but very seldom post from it unless the reply is extremely short.

I have had issues uploading videos to dmcloud and sproutvideo. The upload speed would show as being 80/90GB/s, After troubleshooting with web-shield i discovered the problem was with Avast’s Active Protection System. If i try to disable the shield for test it often crashes the whole Anti-Virus Program/UI!

I have updated my A/V to 9.0.2012 however this has caused me more problems with being unable to disable the web shield. The latest update hasent improved upload speeds with the only way of fixing this is to disable the web shield.

This has been my first real issue with Avast’s A/V system…

Try a repair. If that doesn’t help do a clean install.

ill attempt a clean install tomorrow with the beta build. I have noticed the only way to fix the issue is to disable the shield. Hopefully we can figure out what the problem is

This problem was fixed for me using the latest beta (2014.9.0.2012) after using ‘avastclean.exe’.

Will the update from the beta be rolled out via a regular update within the next few days?

Time frames are not given so it’ll be ready when it’s ready, it may get a beta 2 release yet or it might come straight out as stable :-\

I have installed the beta version (2014.9.0.2012), on the 2014.9.0.2011 version (no fresh install), forgotting to put off the WebShield.ini change (UseStreamFilter=0) I had made.
All was Ok, but when I put off the WebShield.ini change, all went back wrong.

So the beta version (2014.9.0.2012) gives me no results, and now I don’t know what to do.

I must say that I have not really understood what are the consequences of having the WebShield.ini change implemented (efficiency of the Web Shield).
So, more clearly, what is the best for me, on a efficiency/performance point of view :

  • to use V9 with the WebShield.ini change
  • to use the latest V8

If the V8 solution is better, could Lucas give us a link to download the latest V8 (a true Avast file, not a file on others site with malwares).

MPac please do a clean install using the avast clean tool and a fresh copy of the new beta which can be obtained here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=144768.0

Once you have re-installed there should be no need to modify the webshield ini settings.

Installed the test fix (R2 2012?) on W7/Pro with 3rd gen i7 box.
Still no Google Earth, and I’m suspicious that the web problems still not fixed - Gmail taking a long time to load on Chrome,
taking same slower than normal time on Firefox.
Incidentally went to McAfee on my 1st gen i7 Toshiba laptop. Earth still not working with McAfee up and avast shields disabled. Then uninstalled
avast and all is ok.
Please don’t make me do this on my main rig! Fix it!

:frowning:

Hi, if stopping the shield does not help, it’s not relevant to this webshield issue. I’ll move it to a separate thread ~iainclarke.

I have made a fresh install of the beta version (2014.9.0.2012), with avastclear.exe in safe mode.
No results.
All become back Ok when I desactivate the web shield (in parameters/Active Protection) or when I implement the WebShield.ini change (add of [General] et UseStreamFilter=0).

So the questions I asked on 17 Jan 14 is still pending : waiting a corrective version, what is the best for me, on a efficiency/performance point of view :

  • to use V9 (2014.9.0.2012) with the web shield desactivated (in parameters/Active Protection)
  • to use V9 (2014.9.0.2012) with the WebShield.ini change
  • or to use the latest V8 (to be provide by Avast team)

Will this patch/fix be rolled out to the Enterprise version of Avast? We have been experiencing similar issues for awhile now. Thanks.

V9 + webshield.ini change == v8

Thanks Lucas
