Every time I try to open a folder a message window appears asking do I really want to delete the contents of this folder. It pretty hard to get rid of and very effective . I have checked in folder settings have I got a virus that anyone recognises - please.

Can you post a screenshot of the error message?
Did you try to run avast at boot time, run ewido, disable system restore and clean temporary files?
