Found another possible fix for Web Shield blocking browsers

Hey everyone,

First time poster but using Avast for a little over a year.

I, like many others, have been dealing with the Web Shield blocking the browsers from accessing the internet and I think I found another possible solution for a fix.

Im currently running Windows 7 Professional x64 with Avast vers. 5.0.594 .

If you read this thread http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=57443.0 and it doesnt work go back to C:/Windows/Temp and see if theres a folder thats labeled avast5. If its there then go back into your Avast UI and turn off the Web Shield, then go back delete that folder (avast5).

If you cant delete the folder due to admin rights then you will have to turn on the Administrator account thats by default turned off in Windows 7.
To do this you must:

  1. Goto the start button
  2. Goto “All Programs/Accessories”
  3. Right mouse click “command prompt” and select “Run as administrator”
  4. Once your in type: net user administrator /active:yes
  5. Log off your current account and go into the Administrator account that should now be visible at the logon screen.
  6. Go back into the C:/Windows/Temp “under the admin account” and delete the avast5 folder

After you have taken the following steps restart the Web Shield and you should be on your way.
Anyone who wants to add to this or post the steps for other Microsoft OS’s feel free to do so.

Doesn’t make much sense to me.
Either the folder gets re-created, or it doesn’t and WebShield stops working altogether…

In my case the folder was locked and couldnt be deleted and or written to.

My guess is that Avast may not have the admin rights to overwrite the files or directory and that causes the Web Shield to “stop working”

Im just posting what worked for me. Hopefully it can help others as well

avast! locks the folder itself - so that you don’t delete it. That’s as it’s supposed to be.

What is the point from deleting avast5 folder?!

there is no point, when i deleted the folder the Web Shield allowed the browsers to access the internet. simple as that

Are you sure you can delete that folder, coz avast self defense should block you"and of course BLOCK me"

It didnt give me a problem at all.
Once it was deleted i turned the Web Shield back on and Avast re-created the folder and the browsers were able to connect.

Again, just a guess here, it may have something to do with permissions but I cant say for sure because I havent tried it on an XP machine.

Hi…

Thank you for your posts, they might be helpful for others experiencing the same problem.
