Found virus in Avast.

Hi,

I acquired a virus today inside the avast av program. No I didnt just install it. Here’s what it says,

Sign of “Win32:Trojan-gen. {Other}” has been found in “C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\moved\YSBactivex.dll.vir” file.

I moved it to the virus chest then deleted it. Do you think my virus program is compromised? Should I reformat? Suggestions very much appreciated. Thank you.

You haven’t acquired one in the moved folder, but a previous detection by avast, you chose move/rename and that is where those detections are sent if you select that option.

There should be no compromise, but deletion is never a good first or early option, you have none left. They can do no harm in the chest, this gives time to investigate. Like a google search on the detected file name (prior to it being renamed) to see what it’s associated with, http://www.google.com/search?q=YSBactivex.dll.

There is no rush to delete anything from the chest, a protected area where it can do no harm. Anything that you send to the chest you should leave there for a few weeks. If after that time you have suffered no adverse effects from moving these to the chest, scan them again (inside the chest) and if they are still detected as viruses, delete them.

No.
I just think it will be good if you download, install, update and run AVG Antispyware. Some users recommend SUPERantispyware, Spyware Terminator.
If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.

Thanks you for your input it is very much appreciated. Thank you.

I’ll remember to leave things in the chest from now on. And follow your directions. And to the other gentleman. I’ll download avg antispyware and give it a shot tommorow.

Sincerely,
Patrick W.

No problem, glad we could help.

You don’t have to leave them in the chest permanently just a few weeks to ensure no problems.
