Free MAC Version

I’m not sure if I have may facts right or not but it appears that the Free version is only available to Micro$oft lovers. Those of us that have upgraded to a Mac are very pleased to be Micro$oft free. As an ex-windows user I loved Avast and am disappointed that Avast only provides the free version to Micro$oft lovers.

What is with that?

I think the Mac version is coming soon, but I’m not sure if it will have a free version or not.

The MAC version is out but I can’t find a free version.

My question is… Why am I now not worthy of the free version just because I no longer worship Micro$oft ?

My first computer was an apple… but not a Mac. It was a IIe in 1984 – which ran at 1 mhz. Only $1995 for that computer (did I say only?). Had a single 5 1/4 floppy drive and 32K memory and a green screen monitor. Those were the days.

I switched to a PC when there was much more software for MS based computers. Wish I had gone to a Mac though.

Sorry… a bit OT.

There is a MAC version, but not for free:

avast! Mac Edition

I have the MAC version installed. It is not as non-problematic as the Windows version which is weird because the opposite can be said about the actual OS.

Anyway, the trial period has expired. I guess the Avast makers must be in bed with Micro$oft… or is it the opposite… maybe they are having pity on Windows users because they know their OS is so crappy that they need all the protection they can get.

http://marketshare.hitslink.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=8 thats why. not because MAC users are being ignored. there just aren’t that many of you guys

Hmmm… MAC is not alone… Avast doesn’t give a free version to Linux either.

It is not an issue of not wanting to develop a version for the OS due to market share… They have developed it. It is only a question as to why they don’t offer the free version. I guess I was right earlier about it being a pity issue.

g

There is a specific board for macs etc…

the idea of a free version is there, but I don’t know how that idea posted by zilog is coming along…

As you can see from the blog post:
http://blog.avast.com/2010/02/04/avast-5-adnm-and-other-stuff/

both Mac and Linux are valued, and are being worked on but it will take time, and whether there will be a free version for mac, well that is a question for the developers…

OT: wasn’t the Linux version free for home use? I’m sure it took a home key…

Linux and Mac operating systems aren’t used in the same volume by business and government as Microsoft offerings. Most of those enterprises enforce a Microsoft only policy at their establishments, at least for their users. Avast Free is offered as a marketing tool, in the hopes that the employees will be able to sway the IT departments to switch to the commercial Avast offerings. If/when these other operating systems reach the same enterprise usage levels, then you’ll likely see a free offering for them.

Linux is making huge inroads to the servers at enterprises, as it outshines Microsoft offerings and it’s usage on the servers is transparent to the average employee.

In linux, avast is also free; however, it is only an on-demand scanner. I was able to install it in my ubuntu partition.

I agree with you that Linux is rapidly taking over the server market. It hasn’t taken over the workstation market due to it’s overwhelming power.
In relation to workstations, MAC is not near as problematic as Micro$oft and has made itself more user friendly than Linux.
In any case, anyone that does not want many problems will stay as far away as they can from Micro$oft.

I do agree that marketing is the key. If apple would lower their price, they would sweep the workstation market almost over night. The world is getting increasing more frustrated with Micro$oft so it is only a matter of time before some other platform takes over. Considering the marketing of Avast… one would think that they would want to get in on the grass roots of the other platforms and not wait till there is a fight later. Timing is a key marketing factor.

It’s Mac, not MAC. It’s short for Macintosh, it’s not an acronym.
Anyway, I think you’d get a lot farther if you didn’t bash Microsoft (and preach Mac) with every post.
