Freeze During Update

Every couple of days, Avast freezes my computer when it tries to do it’s first update after booting. I know it is the update that freezes it because no matter how I set the delay to update, it always does it at that time. I had posted about this before. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=1018286cc9bcfcb9a9d5ed9aafb9ee0b&topic=38653.0

I use Outpost Firewall 6.5.2358.316.0607 and avast.setup is always the last thing listed connecting before the freeze. There are no errors listed in the event logs or in Avast or OP that I can see.

One thing I did notice is that I believe that the freeze is related to one of Avast’s servers, http://download901.avast.com/iavs4x. My post shows that server and the last two freezes also list that same server.

Is it possible that there is a problem with this server?

WinXP SP3
1G RAM
Avast 4 Pro 4.8.1229
Outpost FW 6.5.2358.316.0607
SuperAntiSpyware (on demand)
SpywareBlaster

Well I hate to disappoint but I’m using XP Pro SP3 & Outpost Pro 2009 (same version number as you) and this doesn’t happen to my system.

There well in excess of 100 servers (see the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def file for a full list open with notepad) so it is a bit strange to see one feature so frequently.

The problem with intermittent problems is the difficulty in pinning it down.

How do you connect to the internet (dial-up/broadband) ?
How long have you set the delay for ?

You say you have set the delay yet “I know it is the update that freezes it because no matter how I set the delay to update, it always does it at that time.” Do you mean it always happens at the time the delay is set to or it always happens shortly after boot ?

I have mine set to 600, 10 minutes since I’m on dial-up I want to be able to quickly go on-line and grab my email and read off-line and not trigger an update check and I don’t have a problem.

You could try setting the VPS and Program updates to Manual so it wouldn’t check and leave it that way for a few days and see what happens, you would however, have to do a manual update periodically to get the signature updates.

I have quickly gone over your last Topic and noticed UHPClean I used this extensively to stop long shut-downs in XP up to SP2.

So when I updated to SP3 it stayed on my old system and I too had some strange freezes on occasion, but I couldn’t pin it down. I got a new system that came pre-installed with SP3 and naturally I downloaded the UHPClean again and ran it on my system and I got random freezes as well.

Now I got rid of UHPClean (msconfig, startup tab and stopped it) I also got rid of something else that used to start, now that seems to have got rid of my random freeze and there doesn’t seem to be any impact on shutdown. I don’t know if UHPClean and SP3 get on too well but it might be worth stopping it run on boot.

If you choose to do that you should reset the auto updates back to their defaults, virus signatures to Auto and Program to Ask, as with two things effectively disabled you can’t tell which helped it it resolves the problem.

I have broadband connected with a Linksys WRT54G and Motorola SBV5121.

I had the delay set for a couple of minutes at first and the freeze would always be at that time. I delayed it to ten minutes and the freeze is at the same time. The freeze occurs every two or three days and at the first update after boot. I don’t have any other problems.

I used to run UPHClean all the time but since the freezing, it caused UPHClean to throw an error so I uninstalled it a month ago. Same freeze but no errors now.

I have another XP desktop and Vista laptop with no problems. I really liked Avast but I guess my only other solution would be to try another AV for a while to see if the problem still occurs. It’s odd that the freeze seems to be related to that server.

I did have the updates set to manual for a few days and everything seemed to be okay but I shouldn’t have to do that.

Thanks.

I do not have a freezing problem with my SP3 systems with UPHClean active.

What is the error reported by UPHClean?

UPHClean Event ID 1031 User profile hive cleanup service was unable to load and start a required driver.
Ensure that the account used to run the service has the load driver privilege and that this account can write to the directory where the service is installed.

I only got the error after I had to reboot from the freeze.

I don’t think it has anything to do with UPHClean. I uninstalled it a few weeks ago and the freezing still continues at the same time that Avast tries to update.

I’m almost positive it has to do with that one server because I checked the logs on my other XP machine that doesn’t have a problem and I could not find that server listed. I have had a freeze on my Vista laptop on occasion and I did find an instance of updating to that server last month but can’t say for sure that was the problem. My sister doesn’t have a problem and she checked her logs and she couldn’t find anything for that server either.

I may be wrong but it’s the only lead that I’ve found since July trying to solve this problem.
