I’ve been attempting to install the latest version of Avast 4.7. I eventually got it installed, but when I tried to scan my local drives (3) it doesn’t get through the first drive before it freezes. It doesn’t freeze up at any particular point that I’ve noticed, but there is a audible click from the CPU and then I know it is about to. Is there something in avasts software preventing it from scanning my drives? Everything is installed correctly up to that point. I ran powermax program on my maxtor drives to make sure they weren’t defective and they all passed with flying colors. Has anyone had or experienced this kind of situation before? If I can’t rectify this situation in the near future I might have to go back using norton’s antivirus. I’ve used Avast for several years and have never had a problem up to this point. Any solutions or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
You can go to the program settings and turn on the creation of the report file (with “OK files” to be included as well in the report). This way, you can find out where the scan really stopped (it’s going to be close to the end of the report). After avast! disappears, check the end of the report file - the “troublesome” file is likely to be close to the end (close in the sense that this particular file will probably not be written in the report, but the previous one will be the last line, so it shouldn’t be hard to guess). We would certainly like to have this file - if it really causes problems to avast! - so that we could fix the problem. The report file created (if you turned it on in program settings) will be (default location) at \Data\Report\Simple User Interface.txt
Did you use Norton in the past, in this computer? If so, follow:
Regarding your question if I have ever used Norton’s on this system and the answer is (N0). I used Norton’s on my old system, a completely different system years ago. I am just contemplating using Norton’s if all else fails. I would prefer to use avast, but at this point avast is at the aggravation stage. I just now observed another situation where if I walk away from the computer for just a few minutes no matter what’s left up on the screen at the time it freezes. Having said that I will try what you were suggesting in your what to do response. Can’t hurt. I will keep you posted with the results. Thanks for your info. Joe
Something is wrong in your computer. Something is conflicting with avast.
Is there any into into Windows Events? Or avast log files (use log viewer to see).
For sure avast shouldn’t freeze… some other software is conflicting… can you guess one?
pilgrim52946,
What kind of computer? What operating system? What anti virus program was on you system before avast! ?
Tech
I have had the same programs on this computer since i put a new hard disk in it, and reloaded all my programs. I have not added any new programs in the last 3 months, this problem started about 2 weeks ago, it has escalated to a major problem in the last week. There is nothing in the avast log files, I did look at the setup files for avast i have this saved if you would like it, I can send it on. I am at a loss as to what to do next. I have uninstalled avast and reinstalled 3 times in the last 2 days, and each time it froze my system at one point or another. Once on installation, another time on reboot after installation, another time on the scan after installation. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
And to Bob I run XP Professional, no other anti virus has ever been on this hard drive. This is a sempron 3000 processor, Asus motherboard A7N8X-E
Strange… strange…
I’ll try to think what is happening but it’s not easy to me.
Maybe Alwil team could help here…
Please check the folder \data\log
Are there any files called unpXXXX there (where XXXX is a random number)?
If so, send them to vlk@avast.com
They may contain more information about the problem (maybe a link to this thread).
Hi Tech
I will check the avast data log you reccomended for inconsistencies with special regards to the unpxxxx issues you mentioned. Maybe the Alwill team you mentioned might have some idea what’s going on. At this point the situation hasn’t changed with this system. So I’m figuring after all is said and done I might end up having to re-formatt my computer if the problem is not resolved. Re-formatting is not my first choice for sure as I have a lot of information on my machine. But what I do know is I can’t keep going on like this with the computer the way it is. I do appreciate your efforts up to this point though. Any other ideas that might pop up let me know. Thanks
Just a suggestion. Divide your HDD in partitions and never let the data (documents, settings, etc.) in the same partition of the operational system and programs.
This saved me tons of hours when I have to reformat… 8)
Hi Tech
Partitians have always been installed on my computer since it was put together a few months back and I agree with you it just makes good sense to do that.
Inncidently the problem has been solved regarding the freezing. It had to do with Spybot Search and Destroy, it wasn’t catching the spyware that was coming through with the uploads etc. So I got a newer version and it detected 70 pieces of spyware in about a few minutes also avast for some unknown reason or other let in a trojan virus it hadn’t detected, which I promptly deleted. After that I did a standard scan using avast and it scanned all 3 drives with no problems. Just thought I would let you know. Thanks for your help though. Joe
