Hi all,
After the upgrade to Version 4.6.652, windows freezes on startup. Uninstalling avast in safe mode eliminates the freezing. Reinstalling avast didn’t help. System specs:
Windows XP SP2
Mobile Pentium 4 2.2Ghz
1GB RAM
Any ideas?

run chkdsk utility and see the problem is solved.
Hi,
That was one of the first things I tried after reinstalling, didn’t help.

So, you were using the previous version of avast! without any problem?
You don’t happen to have another antivirus installed, right?
Hi,
Yes the previous version had no problems. And no, there is no other AV installed.

I’m having the same problem. XP freezes and gives blue screen of death. It took me two hours to figure out that Aavmker4.sys was to blame: “page fault in non-paged area.”
Solution and explanation here:

Hi,
I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling avast. The freezes came back after the reinstall. I don’t get a BSOD, the system just lock freezes.

The system freezes right after booting up?
The mouse cursor moves?
Hi,
Yes, I can move the mouse. It freezes during at the login screen or “loading personal settings” screen or just before explorer loads.

Hmm, this is going to be difficult to solve… :-\
The only possibility I see right now is follow the procedure I described here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=2850.msg20171#msg20171
When you have the dump file, you can ZIP it up and upload it to ftp://ftp.asw.cz (you don’t have read access to this ftp site, just write).
Thanks

Um…I had this “freeze” crap myself and it wasn’t avast its a real pain is the a44 though.
I open IE and my computer would freeze or be so slow it might as well be frozen.OR yahoo or allmost anything
Try going to SUN and get Java from them, disable VM in internet opitions and try start, acc.,system tools, system inf., and internet repair tool in tools. If not…you going to have to format…I know I could be wrong but, this could be related to Yahoo freeze boot…Thats my 2 cents, thanks
I also have the freezing problem on my pc.
The ‘fun’ thing is, a friend of mine has exactly the same problem on his laptop.
After a boot, the desktop is shown, the mouse can be moved, bu t the rest is frozen.
Software we both use (on pc and laptop):
MSOffice 2003
Spybot
Adaware
Easycleaner (Tony arts)
Avast. (no other virusscanner installed)
The Pc runs WinXP Pro SP2
The Laptop runs WinXP Home SP1
Is it posible one of the programs could be the problem? Does anyone else witch the same freezing problem has one or more of this programs installed?
Another thing,
When i boot my pc (or laptop) with al avast services off (done in safe mode), i can turn on the main service while no error will occur (althouhg the avast icon still shows a red cross). When i then turn on another avast service (mail / web or update) it will freeze the pc.
win xp sp2 same exact problem as previous replier. mouse moves but entire desktop freezes, and cursor hourglasses on taskbar. Remove avast and problem disappears. If you need me to try anything ( short of a format:)) let me know. I miss avast already
I’d need someone computer-proficient to follow the steps described later in this thread ( namely here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=12998.msg110335#msg110335 ) and send me the dump…
Thanks

I have the same problem than rapunzel and aiiee on my ACER Aspire 1511 LMi laptop.
Windows XP Home SP2. Mouse moves but the entire desktop freezes and it is impossible to launch a programm.
OK I’ll do this tonight and upload it. Thanks for looking into it
OK, it’s being uploaded to your ftp site, in the incoming directory. If I can do anything further please let me know
I have done some testing and I have it working now.
I have done the following:
Uninstall avast in safe mode.
Reboot to normal mode
Re-install the latest version of avast. (did not set any avast settings).
Reboot
Check if everything works without any modifications of the avast settings. (in my case it worked correctly).
Reboot and check again if the pc works fine.
In that case it is a avast-setting (that was the problem in my case).
Change only one shield (e.g. webshield) settings to your needs.
Reboot
check if the pc still works. If it doesn’t work, you now know where the problem sits.
Repeat this for all the diffrent shields. To see when the problem comes up.
I think it is best to do the standard shield als last, becouse that was were my problem was.
My error was a result of an * whitch i had place in “standard shield → advanced settinges → scan this extentions when opened” (topmost editbox).
When i deleted this * and leaved the editbox blank, avast worked perfectly.
I hope some of you can trace your problem en fix it too, like I did.
Good luck You all.
