I loaded the Avast program for home use. Still in the 60 day free trial period. Came home yesterday to find a large box from AVAST in the middle of my screen that said it had found a Trojan Horse. Ok…when I tried to use the options in the box it keep coming up as read only file and didn’t let me do anything with it…couldn’t move it to the vault or delete it. Tried rebooting the computer and then it was useless…nothing worked…and I mean nothing.
I was under the impression the software was supposed to stop this kind of thing. Why would I actually buy it when this Trj shuts down my system and I have to take it in for repair. I just don’t get it. These were what was in the box from Avast. C:\windows\system32\kernel32.DLL and on another line in the box was Win32: Patched-JP(Trj). I’m just a average home computer user and little of this makes sense to me. Why have the antivirus program if this happens??? Can anyone provide any insight to what happened here? Thanks.
I would imaging that the reason avast couldn’t do any of the actions listed was because this is an important system file and would be in use.
Moving or Deleting said infected system file could leave you in even worse shape. So removal isn’t an option and a repair of the infected file is likely to be the only option, see below.
So it looks like your system was already infected when you installed avast.
problems on reboot could well be down to the infected file/s there may be other infected system files. Or it could be another AV installed or remnants remaining.
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
I have no idea if there were any infected files prior to loading Avast. I did use AVG free home edition prior to Avast. I did the updates to AVG and it ran a scan every night automatically. Sorry I’m not mor knowledgeable on this stuff.
You should certainly download and run the DrWeb CureIt tool as it has previously been able to repair this Win32:Patched infection. You should be extremely about other AV scanners that may only give the option to quarantine or delete, etc. because that could leave you up the creek without a paddle.
I trust that you did uninstall AVG before installing avast, but you should also ensure any remnants of it are gone if you had AVG8.
AVG8 Remover, download tool from here, http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one (I would hazard a guess that would be the 32bit version for you).
