Is the Full scan enough effective to scan the system? Does it scan all of the files (not only system files) and the compressed files or is it better to create a custom scan which will scan all of the files and the compressed files?
I prefer a custom scan, as you can exactly select what to scan…
But usually a full scan is enough.

careful, a full scan may damage your nano ;D
I have realized that. ;D
In my experience with Avast I believe a Custom scan is more effective set on scanning: Operating memory of the computer, auto start programs all users, rootkits full scan…Also I believe a Boot scan is more effective than a regular full scan and faster…Also depends on how your “Performance” is set up in "more details section’
cheers, and safe surfing!!!
Lets not lose sight of the fact that ‘any’ on-demand scan is for the most part going to be scanning dormant or inert files.
Since avast is an on-access scanner files that are ‘active,’ being created, modified or run, etc. will be scanned. This act depreciates the need/value of on-demand scans.
Archive (zip, rar, etc.) files are by their nature are inert, you need to extract the files and then you have to run them to be a threat. Long before that happens avast’s Standard Shield should have scanned them and before an executable is run that is scanned.
Me I have a weekly scheduled Quick scan and a monthly Full System scan and for me that is more than adequate.
I would be careful with a “full” rootkit scan especially if you are running your browser in the sandbox. I would recommend setting rootkit to “quick”. If you run in sandbox you run the risk of false positives as far as rootkits go.
I run a custom scan with a quick scan of rootkits to lessen unnecessary problems.
Great question!
However, I would like to expand it further to ask, What does a Boot Scan do that a Full System Scan doesn’t do? I know-sure, it checks the boot sectors, but what exactly is being scanned in a Boot Time Scan that you would not get in a full scan? Why wouldn’t you just want to do a Boot Time Scan all the time if that was the most effective way to check and clean your machine of crap? (Other than the extra time it would do to finish the scan?)

Try the help section from the GUI. Open the help section…double on “scanning for viruses”…click “boot-time scan”.
What it does is, if you think you have a virus the boot scan will catch it before Windows load. And can be dealt with before any damage can be done. I would recommend default settings.
