Full Scan Hangs - 6.0.1000

tried to put sys info in signature, but I have to make 20 posts(?)

Running Vista Home Premier SP2
Dell Inspiron 1501 (2gb Ram, AMD Athalon64 X2 1.7 ghz)
SpyBot SD Resident, Windows Defender, AVAST 6.0.1000

I had been running AVG 9.0 and noticed it hadnt run a scan in a couple weeks. When launching AVG full scan, hanged for hours and never completed.

Decided to uninstall and go with Avast. Installed, and tried a Full Scan. It too hung. When I say hung, I mean, Avast GUI showed the same file being processed (Windows/System32/lsm.exe). It shows Avg Speed: 0.0 b/sec and Amt of data: 0mb

I closed Avast and ran it as Administrator. Same behavior.
I decided to try a boottime scan. That found 10 viruses which I asked to be deleted.
At the end of the boot scan, it never continued to Boot, so I had to power cycle.

When the PC finished booting, I went into Avast GUI and selected Quick Scan. That ran!
When finished, selected Full Scan and again, it never moves from the lsm.exe file(I waited over 45 minmutes!) :frowning:

One Complaint:
Each time I aborted the scan by clicking Stop. In the logs however, it doesnt identify that a user stoped the scan.

  1. The better is always send a file to Chest (allows recovering) and not direct remove it.

  2. I suggest you use the AVG Remover that can be downloaded here: http://www.avg.com/download-tools

  3. Then I suggest an installation from scratch:

  4. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.

  5. Download the latest avast! version and save it.

  6. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.

  7. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.

  8. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.

  9. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.

  10. Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.

Thanks
All seems to be well now. Not sure if it matterd, but ran another Boot Scan. This one completed and booted into Vista properly. Now I can run Full Scans properly

Glad to know.
Welcome to forums.

well the problem is back >:(
Now both Quick scan and full scan hangs on Windows\System32\lsm.exe

I guess ill try your recommendation of uninstalling. One curious thing is I tried running HouseCall from TrendMicro. It also hangs. I know youre not supposed to have 2 installed AV’s, but I have never had a problem running TM Housecall on any other machines while another AV was present.

The online scanning or the antivirus?
If it is the antivirus, well, you know, sooner or later you’ll have a conflict and problems.
