A while back I started a thread asking about a sandbox program for 64-bit OSs. After reading about PatchGuard I found that’s not going to happen. Someone suggested I take a look at GeSWall, http://www.gentlesecurity.com/index.html. At first I wasn’t sure because I’d never heard of it on this forum. Today I went looking for a review and found one on YouTube from mrizos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBKNHBl-yos. I know some of you don’t like or trust his reviews or tests, I don’t know how much I do, but they’re still interesting. This program was able to stop every single thing that tried to get through it, including rogue programs (although they created a desktop icon).
I just wanted to let you all know about it, and was wondering if any of you already use it, and would comment. Thank you.
One thing I’m not so sure about is the fact that the tested product was the full version. Is the free version just as good at protecting, since on the comparison, it says the free version doesn’t have malware termination options? http://www.gentlesecurity.com/professional.html
I have heard about Geswall, who I think used to have an “official” Support
Forum on the now abandoned CastleCops Forum ; nowadays, I would look for
Info on the Wilders Security Forums ( www.wilderssecurity.com ), most likely
in their “other anti-malware software” forum . I saw a couple of threads which
talked about Geswall in combination with other products ( last posted in late
Dec 2009 ) .
Can anyone who is using Geswall tell me how it impacts system resources and performance so far? I have a 64 bit system so I will need to wait until version 3 comes out.
@Brandonn2008,Go with the free version. All the paid gives you in comparison is Bells and Whistles IMHO. @Ardvark,Its fairly good on resources.I am only running on 1 gig of Ram and have seen no apparent slow down. ;D
Hi ardvark,I always have give my computer a quick scan with MBAM before shutting down at night. And prior to having Geswall it would occasionally find a Minor Pesky, especially if my daughter had been on facebook. But since having Geswall MBAM has found nothing.I am realy pleased with my combination of Avast and Geswall.
By standalone do you mean have it and no antivirus or anything? If that’s what you mean than no. If you download something on purpose and allow it outside of isolation, then you need an antivirus to make sure it’s not infected. Plus a firewall is still probably good, and there are proof of concept ways to get past GeSWall but I believe they were very minor things. Hope that helps.
Hi ardvark,I think I am with Brandonn2008 on this one.As much as I like geswall I do not think I would use it alone.I still use my firewall and Avast with it.
I went ahead and installed Geswall on my VM copy of Windows 7 RC, it does strike me as being more of a HIPS/firewall type of application. It definately does its job!
