get Google Instant in Opera

…okay guys, I got not idea why Google is dismissing Opera in this…operation (bad pun intended). Opera (that I don’t use much but that’s just me, I know it’s a very good browser)won’t get you an up and running Google Instant search…unless ;D :

1 login to your Google account (this is mandatory, at least in the EU) or use this link:
http://www.google.com/webhp?sclient=psy

2 in Opera (while you’re on Google home page) >> Menu >>> Settings >>> quick preferences >>> edit site preference >>> network tab >>> browser identification >>> identify as Firefox >>> you’re done

edit: posted, with a few words added >>> http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Web+Search/thread?tid=429a92076bee810b&hl=en

added: I mean Google might have issues with the Opera team, and I honestly don’t care what that is… Opera is a major browser, outperforming Safari in every way, but hey, it doesn’t belong to Apple and it’s as fast as Chrome

edit: actually just right click on the page and go to “edit site preferences” directly…(yeah as said I don’t use Opera very often)

okay following someone’s remarks on another forum I did a quick check >>> I activated the error console in Opera and there seem indeed to be problems when “instant” is triggered:

JavaScript - http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en

var k=c.getResponseHeader(“Content-Type”)||“”;

Hmmm … I just tried this in Opera 10.6 without making any changes and it worked perfectly.

could be that the new version released today is fine with “instant” >>> 10.62 Gotta give it a try.

no way here, if I don’t set useragent “as Firefox”, instant doesn’t work.

Hi malware fighters,

Google Instant is a new search enhancement that shows results as you type. Unfortunately, this feature requires Chrome v5/6, Firefox v3, Safari v5 for Mac or Internet Explorer v8. So, if you've been hearing a lot about this and run Opera (like most of us here), you most likely haven't seen the Google magic in effect! How to make Google Doodles work in Opera -
http://www.brucelawson.co.uk/ (see the video) All you need to do is to work around Google's browser sniffing and spoof as a different browser, as demonstrated...see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kE8OeVW6mE You read: "Google Instant is not available for your web browser. Please upgrade to the latest version of a modern browser to use Google Instant." Probably will experience this also for Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.19) Gecko/2010062819 Firefox/3.0.19 Flock/2.6.1 ID:2010062819 as well, have to see, I guess it all has to do with automatic serving of content data on the basis of the browser user's geo-location, see our ongoing discussions there...

polonus

Well I have it in Flock/2.6.1 if I allow Google with NS…

Hi folks,

Anyone has come across any comment as why the Google servers sniff Opera out to deny the browser?
Would be interesting to know?
Quite some other subject the following script may solve a lot of the Opera problems considering Google:

direct link: http://files.myopera.com/xErath/files/fix-google-services.js

polonus

I don’t run Opera.

Hi YoKenny,

Why you quote me here selectively, the quote comes directly from the link txt and is not by me (I have tried Opera only once in a blue moon, in the former century, when I visited the searchlores.org pages where it was advised to try as a search specific browser). I try to give my info right as I find them, so your interpretation that I and some others are Opera users is wrong, the link came from an Opera blog network, and so there you will find… well Opera users…quite natural thing. So do not jump to conclusions. I tried to find the specific Google.js code as provided by Opera developers to help the victims with the geo-location instant automatic google search by-pass.
Another interesting related blog txt can be found here: http://blog.tmcnet.com/blog/tom-keating/technology-and-science/geolocation-data-good-for-internet-or-satan-incarnate.asp
So remember these are not necessarily my opinions, but the information as I pass it, can be rather informative,

polonus

So why did you say

So, if you’ve been hearing a lot about this and run Opera (like most of us here)
???

Hi YoKenny,

That came with copying the txt from the link where I found the information, and I do not change link txt as a rule but present it as it is found by me, but good you found the inconsistency if you read it in a particular way, so I am not a current Opera user, I use Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.19) Gecko/2010062819 Firefox/3.0.19 Flock/2.6.1 ID:2010062819 to write this to you,

polonus

@ Polonus… you re-explained/described what I already did in my first post here, when I started the thread ??? and that was precisely one of the two reasons why I started it, to tell people how to circumvent the problem ;D the other reason being to discuss Google"s policy against Opera…and no, we don’t know much about it.

ps: I generally don’t support Yokenny (and still don’t ;D ) but I was also surprised to hear you say that “we’re all using Opera”, I don’t, or very rarely, and I know that you don’t either ???

edit:use quotes

Hi Logos,

Yes, you are right, this crept into the posting with copying the info. I am not a user of Opera, but I know it is a darned good browser for search experts. I like the Mozilla browser because it has particular add-ons I like and the tweakability of it, I used Google’s Chrome for a while but I miss a good add-blocker there and script blocker like NS there. Oh, and because it came with the OS I update and patch IE whenever these updates and patches become available,

polonus

P.S. As you may have spotted I have put the txt in quotes now, that sets it out as it was meant,
