Somehow I managed to pick up the TRZ virus, the one that produces about a gazillion .tmp files. I use Windows XP and the free Avast program. When the virus first struck, I looked for methods of getting rid of it - and each method was more elaborate than the last one. No thanks.
With the help of Avast, I easily got rid of it. It’s time consuming, but here’s what I did:
Run the full scan and delete whatever malware it finds.
Next do the boot time scan and let it run all the way through. Again delete whatever it finds.
Boot up your computer in the Safe Mode. With Windows XP you do that by hitting F8 as the computer is booting up.
Run a System Restore to a date earlier than the date the virus first attacked your computer.
Restart the computer normally and voila! No more virus.
run in order listed
AdwCleaner / Malwarebytes / OTL / aswMBR
when done removal experts will be notified and check the logs for infections, and remove them if any is found
when finish he will remove the tools used
Ok, I’ll take your word for it. For me, this was the first time I picked up a virus in about 12 years. If the infected files are still there, they’re not doing anything. There is no sign of any problem now. If it becomes a phoenix and rises from the ashes, that’s when I’ll follow your procedures. But as long as nothing is going wrong on my computer now, what difference does it really make if the files are still there or not?
In the meantime, do you realize what you’re saying? First it’s run AdwCleaner / Malwarebytes / OTL / aswMBR. Then it’s contact Avast’s removal experts. From where I sit, you’re saying that Avast is not good enough to remove this particular virus. Why isn’t it? I’m also wondering why Avast failed to catch this virus as it was coming in, before it attacked my computer.
no security program have 100% detection…
and something like 100 000 new malware samples is found every day, so to detect it all is mission impossible
and if you check any removal forum like Malwarebytes forum / Bleepingcomputer / Geeks to go …
you will see from the removal help sections that this is not only related to avast … no AV detect everything
also antivirus programs have a general cleaning procedure and often leave leftover files … this can be spotted using the tools above
Agree with pondus, every AV eradicates and prevents as much as malware as possible but the problem is that the number of bad guys making these malware’s is not decreasing. :o >:(
I do not. I could understand if it was a new virus, but the TRZ virus has been around for years. I don’t need to be lectured like a fool, just as if I’m not fully aware that new malware comes out regularly, programed by geeks who have nothing better to do than cause problems for others. But when we’re talking about a virus that’s been around as long as this one, I have to wonder why an anti virus company that touts itself as one of the best of the best failed to detect and prevent it, and then couldn’t fully get rid of it without having to go through a whole rigmarole to do it. I’m sorry, but if Pondus represents Avast, then I’m seeing excuses, but not an acknowledgement that the antivirus program did fail and that work still needs to be done to correct the problem.
In any case, whether all the files were removed or not, the procedure I used has gotten rid of the effect of those files. To me, that’s the important thing. As long as there is no longer any harm being caused to my computer, I don’t care whether some “crap files,” as Pondus puts it, are still on my computer. If you have a computer and use the Internet, then you’re going to get junk files and “crap files.” Most of the time they take up an insignificant amount of space and cause no harm. There are plenty of methods of cleaning them out every so often.
I see absolutely no reason at all to run multiple programs, followed by sending in log files, and waiting for experts to tell me what to delete. If Pondus wants to do that, it’s his choice. My choice is not to spend time worrying about a problem that no longer exists. As I said, if I have any further problems with this virus or it somehow resurrects itself and causes me problems, that’s when I’ll do my worrying. Until then, as far as I’m concerned, problem solved.

if my computer was infected, thats is what i would do
i simply suggested what to do, it is your computer you can do whatever you want with it
Hey, so if 100k pieces of Samples (Only New) are sent in. After 10 days you now have 1million. Avast! is only so big. Nor doesn’t 100% detection ratio and removal exist in ANY software. You’ll find what you have found in any piece of Software created by AV Companies. The tools used are to help people like Essex identitfy and remove the virus.
As a side note. Avast has existed for rough numbers Avast was created in 1996, it’s currently 2013. So Avast! has been around for 17 years.
17 (Years) x 365 (Days) = 6205 days. If it keeps steady at that that’s 620,500,000 Samples. You try giving a 100% detection and removal now. If you can. I’d give you a trillion bucks.
PS: No you can’t destroy every Personal File on the computer and have that count…
