Giu or Gui

I was on the Internet yesterday, when a message came up from Avast saying “Have encountered a Gui (or Giu . Not sure) and need to close down”

Avast then disabled itself completely, and I had to start Avast protection again.

Any ideas ??

GUI (Graphical User Interface).

Did you reboot and if so does avast start normally ?

What avast processes are running in Task Manager, they begin with ash or asw, see image ?

Hmmm… this is a sign of infection.
Repair and update your avast installation and run a full scan.
Other products, like MBAM, would be good to run and confirm you’re clean.

When it happened, my Security Centre came up to say you have lost Anti Virus cover.

I restarted the system, and Avast loaded normally. I then did a full scan, which did not throw up any evidence of infection.

The Avast processes that are running, are the five listed by David.

Everything seems fine at the moment, but I am just curious as to what could have had the power to completely knock out Avast ??

This seems more likely to have been a hiccup and the Windows Security Center (WSC) has a bit reported that. If it happens more frequently there may be some further investigation required.

If it were likely to be malicious (e.g. an attack) then it would be unlikely that on reboot avast would be running, which is why I consider it more likely to be a hiccup.

For your peace of mind you could run other tools.
If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it and report the findings (it should product a log file).
