Giving Up...

Okay, I have installed the free version of Avast a multitude of times and it keeps locking up my machine. I’m running Windows 7 64-bit. During a manual scan, my laptop (Dell E6500) will completely freeze up. Even after I close the Avast program, I get a momentary freeze where I can’t do anything. After I uninstall Avast, my machine goes back to normal, with no lock-ups. I don’t remember seeing this problem on other machines, but it’s just to painful to use it now. Maybe this will get resolved someday. :frowning:

Dell machines usually comes with Norton or McAfee preinstalled, have you removed it before installing avast?

@ the OP: there’s no way to resolve anything if you don’t give more details.

Not sure how to give you more details without installing the program and waiting for the lock-ups to go away to somehow generate log files. This was a clean install of Windows 7 with no prior anti-virus products. I see many mentions of a similar issue on your forum and I was hoping that it was resolved, but maybe not.

there are too many possible causes, including other installed software or remnants of these software that may conflict with Avast… or may be it’s just one component of Avast that causes the freezing.

1 do you still have any other security software installed? if that’s the case, what?
2 if you removed anything already, did you use an adequate cleaner? (for Norton, McAfee etc…)

… and finally:

3 could you try re-installing Avast without the behavior shield >>> choose custom install during the setup and uncheck the behavior shield.

ps: I assume you’ve using Avast “free”, not AIS.

Brianss,

I too have Win7 64bit on laptop as well as a desktop, Insprion’s all with Avast!5 v5.1.889 and all run well and have Microsoft Security Client, SS&D/w TTimer, SUPER Antispyware FREE and they are still telling me that I need to remove MSC, TTimer, and SUPER Antispyware because of conflicts with Avast, that are not there. Just insure you have the Symantec’s Nortonw fully removed. I use the VSRevo Group’s RevoUninstaller to remove any and all traces of a program that is installed. There are many other removers, someone here on this forum can guide you to them as I am not smart enough to be able to give you the full link.

I am not smart enough to be able to give you the full link.

Thanks for the help. I re-installed and disabled the Behavior Shield and the results were much better. However, does this mean the Behavior Shield needs to be disabled all of the time?

if it’s a problem on your system, yes. (I meant not just disabled ok, but not installed at all). I had bad issues with it as well in W7 64. Heard it was not the case for all W7/64 users though.

Have you restarted the computer since the VPS update? Restart is required for the Behavior Shield update, which was included in the VPS update yesterday evening. You’re absolutely right ! I didn’t restart.

After a reboot things seem to be better indeed. I’ll update if the problem occurs again. Thanks

can’t you just post a link and a brief summary instead of all that ??? ::slight_smile:

not mentioning that a restart might, as well as might not be the fix, so no need to post it in red as if it was the absolute answer ;D … not to mention that people forgetting to reboot after an upgrade must be rare I suppose ::)… as to a mandatory reboot after a VPS update… behavior shield related… never heard of that.

NTxLS if your not smart enough to post a link then you should definatly not be offering advice on this forum, as you have been instructed previously that the combination of security you have combined on your system is a high risk and you were advised to delet mse and turn off teatimer to save future issue’s, no one has said to get rid of superantispyware as it works well with avast as does malwarebytes.
Iv also noticed that you like to advertise your software combination in just about all of your post’s like you think your getting away with something (haha look at me),i feel that you are a very disruptive person and would not make a good addition to this forum so it would be nice if you would just read the forum post’s and maybe learn something about computers and software before deciding to place one of your ridiculas post’s again and if it continues i will be requesting a ban of yourself.

How about downloading Emsisoft HiJackFree or something and saving the log and posting it here so we can see what programs are running, starting up, etc on your system and some Experts here may be able to find other useful information that will help them to help you?

Have mercy on our Poor (not meant as an insult) Fellow Human, Boss, forgive him for he does not know what he do.

So, we can post links here? If so, good, because I was too lazy to read all the rules yet.

Don’t ban me bro! Joke

Let us all relax and disagree in peace, no one needs to get Killed/Banned, in my opinion  ; but you are the Expert, Boss, so my opinion ain’t worth much. Hehehe

But if the Boss decides that someone should be banned, then: “There is nothing I can do for you Son.” -Modified True Grit Quote.

brianss,

Try installing avast! Free Edition in safe mode with networking.

This works for many.

I had to install avast! Free and AIS on my XP computers in safe mode with networking.

I didn’t have to use in safe mode with networking to install avast! on my 7 64bit laptop.

If all else fails, I recommend http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

I’m using it on my 7 64bit laptop.
