Gmail doesn't load in Firefox (works in IE)

Just spent 20 min rummaging this form and didn’t see an answer. Apologies if this is a well worn topic or if I’m just plain clueless.

I’m new to Avast and so far have been pleased with the exception of one major problem: Gmail loading always stalls when using Firefox (it works in IE)… All other sites/pages load fine including my other web-based email.

Running WinXP Professional SP2, Firefox 2.0.0.14, IE 6.0 (with a lot of garbage after it), Windows firewall.

Any pointers appreciated. I hate using IE! Thanks!

If you disable avast WebShield, will it work?
Which extensions do you use?

Terminating WebShield makes no difference. Gmail still stalls on load.

Oops, forgot the extensions (I did say there is the possibility that I’m clueless, didn’t I?)

  • Downloads in tab
  • Google toolbar
  • Talkback

Hmmm… seems that avast is not the problem here…
Hope some Firefox guru can help you on this. I’ll keep thinking about…

I’m afraid I assumed avast since the problem started after it was installed. Could try uninstalling. What do you think?

Do you happen to have any security based extensions, like NoScript or CookieSafe ?

I take it the the problem arises on an HTTPS (secure) page as the gmail signin I would assume is a secure web page ?

So you logon and click OK, etc. the user name and password would be validated and you would then be redirected to your account at what point are you experiencing problems ?

Do you accept cookies in firefox as it may be that cookies are used to store your logon info and transferred to the account, if that doesn’t happen I would guess there would be a problem.

Sorry I can’t be of more practical help as I don’t use gmail.

Cookies are the culprit! I tried clearing my Firefox cookies before uninstalling avast and it worked. Never had the problem before, hopefully won’t have it again. Thanks for your help.

No problem, welcome to the forums.
