Thinking about going from free to pro. As far as I can see, the only advantage (besides paying Avast) would be the sandbox since the script shield won’t work on my 64 bit systems according to their website. Am I missing any other advantages of pro over free, and also would like to know how the sandbox works. Is it just automatic when you encounter questionable websites etc or do you have to set it up and/or tell it to run certain things within the sandbox?

It also has the command line scanner, ashCmd.exe.

No.
do you have to set it up and/or tell it to run certain things within the sandbox?
Yes. You can run a program sandboxed only when asked, or specify that a
particular program is to always run sandboxed.
Since the Pro has a 30 day trial period, why don’t you install it and see
for yourself before paying?
